8 October 1999 No. 29From the Head of Junior SchoolAs Term Four commences, I extend a very warm welcome to all boys and families. I especially welcome new families to the College and hope that each new Scotch Collegian enjoys his education with us! Mr Carson has returned from long service leave refreshed and relaxed. I trust that everyone enjoyed their own refreshing break and that batteries are re-charged, set for the busy term ahead. Special congratulations are extended to Mr Gary Irvine (Year 6) and his wife Natalia who welcomed the safe arrival of Tyler on the 29 September. It is wonderful to welcome this new addition to the Scotch family. On Tuesday, Reverend Bradbeer presented badges to this term's Form Captains. Congratulations and best wishes are extended to the following boys:
Tomorrow is Senior School Family Day and the College will be a hive of activity. Next Saturday will be Junior School's turn and I remind boys and parents that this is considered a compulsory day for all Junior School boys. I note that boys in Years Three to Six need to be at school by 8.45 am and will be dismissed at 1.05 pm. Boys in Years Prep to Two are required for events between 10.20 am and 11.45 am and are expected to remain until 1.05 pm. This is a wonderful family day and I encourage all families to come along and enjoy the true Scotch Family atmosphere, which, in many ways, is so unique! During the last couple of days of last term, Watkin MacLennan, Jonathan Choiselat, Harry Curtis and Sam Henderson represented Scotch at the National Ski Championships held at Perisher. These boys competed exceptionally well and earned the title of "National Champions" for the Alpine and Mogul sections for Years Five and Six. Special congratulations are extended to each of these boys on a remarkable and well-deserved achievement. We have all heard the jokes that start with, "Do you want the good news or the bad news?" Whilst this is not a joke, I will start with the good news! Mr Peter Curran (husband of Fiona, Junior School Secretary) has been appointed Assistant Coach of the Adelaide Crows. We are delighted for Peter as this is a wonderful opportunity for him as he establishes himself as a coach at the highest level of Australian Rules football. The bad news is that Peter and Fiona will be relocating to Adelaide at the end of this year and, as such, we will be losing Fiona at the close of school in December. More will be said at a later date about Fiona's many contributions to Scotch, however, special congratulations are extended to Peter on his success. My theme for this week has been that of "Service." The boys were encouraged to look for ways of doing things for others; to not wait to be asked to do something; and to serve others because you care, not because you may get something in return! It was stated that helping others is one of the best ways to serve God. I reminded the boys of the words that Paul wrote to the Corinthians... "There are different ways of serving, but the same Lordis served. There are different abilities to perform service, but the same God gives ability to everyone for their particular service." (1 Corinthians 12:5-7) My thought for the week... A good way to forget your troubles is to help others out of theirs.Guy B Mason From the JSPAWelcome back to the last term of 1999. I can hardly believe that I have only six weeks until my term as President ends. I have enjoyed the year so far and we have two major functions ahead this term. In your son's school bag you will find many items from the JSPA. Please look carefully, as all are important. Cake Kit for Sports Day I would like to thank all those who have volunteered their help for Sports Day. We have had a good response and we really appreciate your assistance on the day. If anyone can help for an hour from 11.30 am to 12.30 pm it would be great to have a few more helping hands. Please ring me on 9824 8242. Also, thank you in advance from the Cake Stall. It is a very important part of Sports Day and your donations are greatly appreciated. I look forward to seeing you on Sports Day and sharing this fun day with you and the boys. Scotch College Junior School takes great pride in the way that our school community works together for the benefit of our boys. Being part of this wonderful school is a privilege that I have enjoyed giving my time to help make the "Scotch Family" a reality. It does not just happen. If you have any time to give please consider becoming a class representative or committee member. Please reply in time in regard to the Riverboat Luncheon, as numbers will be required for booking the boats. We may not be able to accommodate late RSVPs. This luncheon will be a great way to end 1999 at Scotch College Junior School. Have a great Term Four!
