From the Head of Junior School
I trust that families enjoyed the four day weekend, which has left us with a short week.
Year Three returned this afternoon from their overnight camp at Cowes. I am sure the boys all enjoyed their first "away from school" camp, with such beautiful weather over the last couple of days only adding to their enjoyment.
Many thanks are extended to Mrs Nash, Mr Murdoch, Mrs Robertson and Ms Harris for their efforts in ensuring the smooth running of the camp.
As it has been a short week, we have had no "Theme", however, I leave you with the following thought:
Happiness is something that is never far away,
It's as close as the things we do and say.
So start out each day with a smile on your face,
And will make this world a happier place.

German Week Diary, October 25 -29, 1999
Monday saw the introduction of German Activity Week at Assembly. The boys were told their activities for the week and of the competitions for boys, families and teachers. Grades 2 and 3 were treated to some 'Schuhplattler' type dancing by Monique, a dancing member of the Teutonia Club of Melbourne. The boys had a great time doing what is a difficult type of dancing to do.
Tuesday saw Pastor Stern, a Lutheran Pastor from the Springvale area come and speak to the children. He emphasized the fact that all of us have a gift or gifts of some kind, and told us the story about Margaret Steif, a German lady who was struck down with polio. She decided she wanted to do something for children, using her talents in sewing to make soft toys. These humble beginnings have now of course turned into a huge selling range of toys worldwide. We sincerely hope Pastor Stern will come back and share his 'gift' with us again next year. Some Year 8 and 10 boys came down from the senior school to do some role-play activities with the Grade 4 boys. They worked in small groups on some sporting interviews and 'who am I?' quizzes and presented them to the whole group at the end. It was terrific to see these boys working together, displaying their language and acting skills.
Wednesday saw the 5s practicing their soccer skills. The three activities were shooting (using the world famous Scotch College Torwand!) heading and ball juggling. We had some very skilful performances, the highlight being Ben Roufail putting one of his shots through the 100 target... well done Ben!
Thursday saw the beginning of the cooking sessions in the Language Centre kitchen, presented on this particular day by the Adviser for German from the education dept. Roxy McGuire and her ' Goethe Army' of students from Germany. The boys had great fun making and tasting their 'Apfelpfannkuchen'
Friday morning saw a 'German - packed' Assembly with; prizes presented to boys by Elaine Tarran, head of languages in the senior school, Ben Salfeld, Otto Henkell's exchange student telling us a little about his life in Germany, the whole school's rendering of 'Hey ho spann den Wagen an' beautifully rehearsed and presented by Miss Jenny Allen. The final cooking session was admirably presented by Petra Henkell, showing the boys how to prepare and devour 'Kartoffelpuffer' Frau Batkin told us about the origins of 'Nikolaustag and the Preps and 1s made their own boot, ready for December 6 when St Nikolaus is due to come to Scotch College. I hope the Grade 1s are lucky this year, because he's only ever been to Preps before!!
Thankyou to all the families who handed in a competition entry, we had 16. Congratulations to the Andrews, Tuckwell, Sinclair, Clark, Jakubowicz, Batkin, Acton and King (David) families. Well done also to Benjamin Wong for correctly answering every one of the daily questions set for boys and of course to our super resourceful Phys. Ed. Dept. for answering all the staff questions correctly!
Thankyou to everyone who made a contribution to a very enjoyable week.
