12 November 1999 No. 34From the Head of Junior SchoolAt 11.00am on 11 November 1918, the guns fell silent as hostilities ceased on the Western Front, ending four years of death and destruction. Earlier that day, at 5.00am, an armistice was signed in a railway carriage at Compi¸gne. People celebrated across the world. The 11th of November subsequently became known as 'Armistice Day', a day which we remember those who died in the 'Great War'. In 1997, the Governor-General issued a proclamation declaring the 11th November as 'Remembrance Day', a day to commemorate all those who served and died in all wars. Yesterday at 11.00am, the Junior School shared a minute of silence to remember the sacrifice of those who died or otherwise suffered for Australia's cause in wars and war-like conflicts. This is something I trust, we as a school never fail to forget. Today we welcomed new boys for next year into the school. Boys across all year levels came together at 'Orientation Day' to meet teachers and other boys with whom they will be spending the first year of their new school. This also provided a wonderful opportunity for our current boys to also spend some time in their new year levels, and to hear something about what they can expect next year. This evening our 'Drum Corp', under the guidance of Ms Jude Hallum, will participate in the annual Cadet Tattoo on the main oval. I wish our drummers all the best for what is a very exciting evening of activities. Interested families are welcome to attend the Tattoo, which commences at 8.20pm. (BYO blankets and chairs.) Next week sees the presentation of the annual Junior School Concert. This is a wonderful evening of entertainment and involves every boy in Years Four to Six. It is therefore expected that every boy in those levels attend. The Concert commences at 7.45pm and should conclude at approximately 9.00pm. Full school uniform is required. Families and friends are warmly invited to share this evening with the Upper Primary boys. I remind parents with boys in Years Three to Six that Junior School Speech Night is scheduled for Thursday 2 December and that this is also considered a compulsory night for boys. Full school uniform will also be required for this important function. Due to preparations for next week's concert, there has been no theme for the week, however, 'Remembrance Day' has been a major focus. My thought for the week; Be thankful that you don't already have everything you desire. Guy B Mason From The Physical Education DepartmentCongratulations to the following boys who competed in the Victorian Primary Schools Sports Association Track and Field Championships at Olympic Park last weekend.

After School Care 2000Parents who require the services of the After Care Unit in 2000 are advised that you may pick up an enrolment form from the Junior School Office or from Mrs Comport in the After Care Unit. Please remember even if you are planning to use the Unit on an occasional basis a form still has to be completed before you can book your son in. It costs nothing to enrol your son so if there is any possibility that you may need the Unit please fill one out and return it to the Junior School Office. Fiona Curran Forthcoming Dates:
New Boy And Orientation DayThis morning the Prep teachers played host to an excited group of young boys who will join the Junior School as Preps next year. At the same time, the boys already in the Junior Primary Department had the brief opportunity to experience life at their Year 2000 year level. Whilst the boys may have met a particular teacher in a particular classroom, it is important for them to know that they will not necessarily be with that teacher, in that classroom, next year. Class teachers and class lists have not been finalised at this time. The Junior Primary staff has passed on this information to the boys, but we would appreciate parents reinforcing it today and over the following weeks and months.
Thank you,
