Program

Art lessons in the Junior Art Studio begin in Prep and all boys attend classes for 70 minutes per cycle.  Two-dimensional and three-dimensional media and techniques are explored during sessions.  Areas such as textiles, pottery, painting, printing, drawing, collage and construction (using media such as paper maché and modroc) are often integrated around a theme or concept being explored within the classroom.

Art Club is an extra class that runs during lunchtime on the second day of the cycle. All students (in years one to six) are welcome to participate.  It is a voluntary activity time where students can continue working on their art pieces or choose to create an individual project outside classes. All boys working in the studio are expected to wear an Art smock, at all times, so their school uniform is protected from the products used in sessions.

While working in the studio, boys are encouraged to:
•    enjoy activities and develop their confidence using a variety of media
•    be original, explore concepts and develop ideas
•    improve skills, techniques and processes through regular practice
•    present their work for display and discussion
•    develop their own critical awareness and ability to analyse art works from the past and present
•    become aware of cultural diversity
•    appreciate the role of technological change

Having a purpose is often an important part of art making. All students’ work is valued and frequently placed on display for a period of time before taking it home. Art pieces will be on display in the Art Studio, Assembly Hall and Junior School Foyer throughout the year. Boys are also encouraged to display their work in the community.

Art Curriculum:

Prep
In Term Two, students are introduced to modelling media and further develop their drawing techniques. They will use specific joining skills to create two and three-dimensional pieces in clay and plasticine. Awareness of different types of clay (natural and manmade) will be discussed and opportunities will be available to experiment with both. A number of pieces will be fired and displayed throughout sessions. Boys will also brainstorm and create images, using a variety of drawing tools for the Library and Art combined project, Zingora the Dragon Picture Story Book.

Year 1
Boys will continue the Mini Beast theme and begin the Library and Art combined Zingora the Dragon Picture Story Book project in Term Two. Paint techniques, especially mixing and applying products onto papers as well as simple printing methods using stamps, sponges and mono-printing will be part of many sessions to create images for the integrated unit of work.

Year 2
The Art program will integrate some activities with the classroom and Library during Term Two. Sessions will begin with discussions about ways light and colours are used in the entertainment business. Imaginative drawings and cardboard figures will be created through the inspiration of fireworks, prisms, film and Indonesian shadow puppets. Boys will also brainstorm ideas to develop a picture book in the Zingora Dragon series and apply drawing, painting and collage techniques to their own page in the book.

Year 3
Students will look at drawing, collage and clay techniques during Term Two, drawing some inspiration from the classroom theme of Land and The Environment. Environmental sculptures created by Andy Goldsworthy will be the catalyst for some art works. Different perspectives of the landscape will be discussed and viewed, especially the formation of natural patterns. Clay’s soft form will help students create organic textural pieces and objects will be collaged together in small group works. Boys will also brainstorm a story for the Zingora Dragon Picture Story Book series and illustrate a page using pencil and black line techniques.

Year 4
Inspired by the classroom theme of Structures, boys will be introduced to modelling with matchsticks and pop sticks in Term Two. They will be asked to create imaginative sculptures and may work collaboratively during some projects. Joining products with a variety of adhesives, balancing pieces on top of each other and using different display methods will be main foci during classes. Later in the term, boys will brainstorm story outlines and explore painting and collage techniques to create a page in the Zingora Dragon Picture Story Book.

Year 5.
The Art program will integrate with the Library and the classroom during Term Two. Inspired by the Zingora Dragon Picture Book series, boys will brainstorm and develop a page for their book using painting and collage techniques. They will also be inspired by the classroom theme of Aboriginal Studies and will create a range of patterned, stylised works, inspired by indigenous artists.

Year 6
The environment theme in the Year Six program will continue into Term Two, while students compete their collaborative collaged, recycled art. They will also brainstorm ideas for a Zingora Dragon Picture Book. Inspired by a number of illustrators, boys will incorporate a similar stye of drawing techniques to their designs to make a page in the book. Pattern, line and colour will be the main foci of sessions.
