Program

Art lessons in the Junior Art Studio begin in Prep and all boys attend classes for 70 minutes per cycle.  Two-dimensional and three-dimensional media and techniques are explored during sessions.  Areas such as textiles, pottery, painting, printing, drawing, collage and construction (using media such as paper maché and modroc) are often integrated around a theme or concept being explored within the classroom.

Art Club is an extra class that runs during lunchtime on the second day of the cycle. All students (in years one to six) are welcome to participate.  It is a voluntary activity time where students can continue working on their art pieces or choose to create an individual project outside classes. All boys working in the studio are expected to wear an Art smock, at all times, so their school uniform is protected from the products used in sessions.

While working in the studio, boys are encouraged to:
•    enjoy activities and develop their confidence using a variety of media
•    be original, explore concepts and develop ideas
•    improve skills, techniques and processes through regular practice
•    present their work for display and discussion
•    develop their own critical awareness and ability to analyse art works from the past and present
•    become aware of cultural diversity
•    appreciate the role of technological change

Having a purpose is often an important part of art making. All students’ work is valued and frequently placed on display for a period of time before taking it home. Art pieces will be on display in the Art Studio, Assembly Hall and Junior School Foyer throughout the year. Boys are also encouraged to display their work in the community.

Art Curriculum:

Prep
In Term Four boys will be introduced to textile and printing methods. The printing sessions will revisit colour theory as well as repetitive sequence. Students will design and create a block and use commercially produced ones for their designs. Ideas about Christmas will follow and the application of collage to irregular surfaces will take place over numerous sessions. At the end of the year, boys will produce a table centrepiece and decoration using the skills from classes.

Year 1
The classroom theme of Dinosaurs will be integrated with the Art program during Term Four. Students will manipulate clay to form flat and three-dimensional sculptures, focussing on shape, texture and joining methods. Christmas decorations, based around Christian symbols, will also by produced using limited colour and patterns.

Year 2
The Art program will integrate the classroom theme of flight and Christmas during Term Four. Boys will experiment with shape, colour and various materials to produce a futuristic flying machine before applying printing techniques to fabric for their Christmas decoration. Later in the term, they will be introduced to felt making and simple stitching processes to decorate their three dimensional design.

Year 3
In Term Four textiles will be focussed upon in many sessions. Students will apply simple stitching and beading techniques to commercial felt for a Christmas tree decoration. Activities integrating the classroom theme will also be explored later in the term.

Year 4
In Term Four the boys will continue to create mosaic pieces for the Patterson Railway Station project and the shortlisted book, Family Forest. Later in the term textile skills will be introduced. Weaving and wrapping techniques will be focussed upon to make an unusual Christmas decoration.

Year 5.
In Term Four Indigenous Art will be continued by exploring, discussing and comparing a range of historic and contemporary styles. Patterns, lines and shapes will be used to create their own design. Boys will also draw inspiration from the environment to create an illustration using Scratch-a-Lite. Later in the term Christmas symbols are introduced and a decoration for the tree will be made.

Year 6
Boys will have the opportunity to create an electronic collage from a number of previous art works during Term Four. They will manipulate images using electronic software to produce a final masterpiece for display. Later in the term they will apply produce a Christmas decoration.
