Drama

Staff:

Tremaine Pavlovski

In drama the boys will explore, depict and celebrate human experience by imagining and representing other people through live enactment.  Drama is a collaborative art, combing physical, verbal and aural dimensions.  In drama the boys will experience theatre and develop an understanding of the performer/audience relationship.  Learning in drama can be both process and performance.  The boys will have the opportunity to combine the elements of drama to make, present and respond to representations of human situations, characters, behaviour and relationships.  They will make drama through dramatic play, role-play and improvisation, structuring the elements into play building, directing and scriptwriting.  In presenting drama they will learn, as actors, to use body and gesture, voice and language, through interpretation and rehearsal processes as well as production and performance.  In responding, the boys will learn about how drama contributes to personal, social and cultural identity.  The boys will study the diversity of purposes, forms and styles in drama and theatre both contemporary and from other times, places and cultural contexts.

Drama - Term Two

Prep

Rhyming and Chanting and Storytelling

In this unit students work in improvisation, movement and reader’s theatre to develop and present a performance based on a selection of chants and rhymes being explored in the class program.  These may be traditional chants and rhymes, or those from cultures and languages other than English, contemporary chants or student – devised chants and rhymes.

Year 1
If the Cap Fits

In this unit the boys will have opportunities to recognise and value the ways in which body language facial expression and nonverbal vocalisation can be used to create their own improvisations.  The use of symbol and tension as elements of drama are also incorporated to help students understand why action is shaped in a particular way to create meaning.  The drama unit aims to support the classroom integrated studies program.

Year 2
Storybook Adventures

In this unit the boys will explore the notion of Process Drama.  They will use dramatic forms to tell a story with a large group of people involved.  They will look at setting, text/dialogue, plot, climax, and beginning-middle-end of a story.  The boys will share and create characters, setting, images, and dialogue.  The process is important and emphasized, not the end product/production of a story.

Year 3
A new look at Fairy tales

In this unit the boys will be given the opportunities to explore the nature of Fairy tales.  They will look at its structure, convections associated with storytelling and readers theatre.  The use of narrative encourages students to adopt roles and move into the imagined reality of the fairy-tale.  The story is brought to life by the use of voice, gesture, facial expression, body position, pace and sound effects.  Dramatic tension and mood are manipulated throughout the story to increase the impact. The ways in which the meaning and purpose of the story can change with cultural context is also investigated.

Year 4
Designing Koola Park Playground.

In this unit the boys enact real and imagined events from their everyday experiences of playground interactions. The boys will participate in a whole class improvisation in which they are enrolled as designers and make links with their classroom-integrated unit – Structures.  They develop characters; manipulate drama elements to enhance their understanding of concepts of space and measurement as they relate to the design task – ‘Building a new playground for Koola Park Primary.’

Year 5
A Tree Grows

This unit supports the classroom-integrated topic – Biodiversity.  The boys will work in improvisation and movement to explore and enhance their understanding of rainforest environments.  They will consolidate and extend their belief in roles.  They will focus on vocal performance and narrative movement pieces to express their understanding of the issues related to rainforest protection.

Year 6
‘Shakespeare – the man and his world.’

The boys will be exposed to the life and times of William Shakespeare in preparation for the end of semester performance based on this theme.
