Information and Communication Technology

Mr John Croxford

Information and Communication Technology Program:

Information Technology is playing a larger part in our lives. We access digital information everyday and use it in a variety of ways. To make the most effective use of this information, we need a range of skills for a number of different purposes. At Scotch College Junior School, the Information and Communication Technology Program aims to develop these skills so that boys are equipped to manipulate information to suit their needs.

A number of computer applications are used to assist in the development of these skills and include stand-alone software packages as well as software suites or integrated packages, such as Microsoft Office. The software used includes word processing, spreadsheeting, drawing and painting applications. We also make full use of multimedia applications, such as Inspiration, Powerpoint and Kahootz. The iLife software also adds an exciting dimenstion to the boys work on the computers. CD-ROMs and the Internet are used for the research of topics. Boys also learn file manipulation using the Junior School network storage areas, hard drives and individual memory sticks.

Learning Point (Intranet)
Scotch College makes full use of an Intranet system, known as Learning Point. Learning Point ties together the use of information technology in both the home and the school. Each boy has a username and password that gives them access from an icon on the home page. Boys from Year 2 to Year 6 are taught how to utilitise this educational resource during ICT sessions.

Computers
Laptops Laptops are used in all of the classrooms to continue the practical use of skills taught after Information and Communication Technology classes. These computers are connected to the network via a wireless connection, allowing portability whilst still connected to the Junior School network.

Units of Study:

All boys in the Junior School will be using their ICT sessions to compliment the current classroom curriculum being studied each term. Many different software applications will be used. ICT sessions allow the opportunity for purposeful work to be completed whilst honing valuable computing skills. These sessions also provide the links and skills necessary to complete homework using Learning Point, the school's intranet, and the internet.

Each term a number of sessions will be required to help the boys develop valuable file organisation skills as they create, fill and clean out their network storage areas, including the student side of Learning Point, where all students have been encouraged to set up folders. Each student from Year 1 has a Scotch College email account, the boys are shown how to use this account when demand requires it. Some classes use email to communicate with students from other classes, schools and countries. They are also used by the students to communicate with parents and to transfer files to and from home.

Prep

During Term Two the Prep boys will be studying the unit 'I Am A Scientist'. The boys will continue to develop their understanding of this topic in ICT through the manipulation of images and text. The graphics programs of Kidspiration and 2Paint will all be used. The boys will produce documents with both graphics and an increasing amount of text as their knowlege of the keyboard develops.

Year 1

During Term Two, Year One is going to study 'The Human Body'. During this unit the boys will learn about themselves and the vital organs that go to make up their bodies. The focus of ICT during this term will be on word processing. The boys will create their own "Human Body" book which will include text and images. The boys will create images and concept maps using 2Paint and Inspiration and type up their research using MS Word.

Year 2

The boys in Year Two will be studying a unit on 'The History of Hawthorn' during the second term. The boys will be demonstrating their understandings through the creation of concept maps using Kidspiration. The boys will also be demonstrating their understandings of this topic through the presentation software, Keynote. File Mangement will continue to be an important element for this term with the boys expected to save work correctly to both their class folder and their Digital Diaries.

Year 3

Year 3 will be introduced to the concept of Digital Storytelling during Term Two. The boys will create a presentation that will incorporate their own original images and text. The images will be created by the boys in 2Paint. The boys will utilise these images in iMovie where they will be able to add text and audio. An emphasis on maintaining the Digital Learning Diaries will also continue throughout the term.

Year 4

During Term Two, the Year Four boys will focus on the topic: 'Structures'. Modern buildings, bridges, construction materials and methods will be compared with those of previous eras. The boys will research the Internet and present their findings in the form of a data chart which will also include downloaded images. Further use will be made of the Internet through the application 'Google Earth' The boys will locate and visit the 3D images of Famous Structures from around the world. The boys will also be introduced to iMovie and use this application to create a multimedia presentation.

Year 5

The Year 5 boys will be begin their work in Term Two with creating a short presentation of "Introduced Species' using the web authoring software, iWeb.  Following on from this they will extend their understanding of the multimedia features of the program iMovie by creating a presentation based on the the theme 'Our Environment'. This presentation will incorporate still images, video, and audio. They will also use the 3D simulation software 'Kahootz' to create a project related to their integrated unit of 'Biodiversity'.

Year 6

The Year 6 boys will commence their work in ICT in Term Two continuing to explore the features of iMovie. The students will use this software to incorporate images they have located on the Internet into a short presentation. In addition to the images the boys will also incorporate original text (their poetry) and music created in GarageBand. Following this, the boys will be introduced to the Web authoring software, iWeb. They will use this application to create a web page based on their studies of 'Natural Disasters'.
