Mr. Phil Richards - 6R
Year Six is seen as an exciting and challenging year. Each student is considered a leader and encouraged to take on extra responsibilities as well as set a fine example for the younger students. Specific leadership roles have already been awarded for School Captain, School Vice Captain, House Captains and Vice Captains, Music Captain and Sport Captain. All boys however will have the opportunity to be part of a ‘Service Group’ that will have various responsibilities and leadership opportunities, throughout the year. During Year Six, boys work to consolidate and establish their skills of personal organisation, time management, concentration, personal interaction with their peers and common sense. They are expected to meet their study commitments and develop consistent skills in written and spoken communication. Record books are an important part of daily life at Scotch and each boy is encouraged to keep their book up to date. Using the Scotch Intranet on a regular basis is an essential part of life in Year Six. Assignment information, website links, notices, up coming events, and published work will be updated regularly. Each student needs to be familiar with using the various folders within the Scotch Intranet environment to keep building on his skills. We have been extremely fortunate to be supplied with a full class set of MacBook computers for the Year Six area. One boy per class has been assigned a computer for the year to care for and use across a range of curriculum areas. Careful timetabling ensures the computers are used to maximum capacity. This year we are implementing the Habits of the Mind and throughout the first term the boys will explore these habits and gain a greater understanding of them. As the year progresses there will be opportunities for the boys to reflect on which of these habits they already posses and which they could do with developing further. It promises to be an exciting and challenging year and we look forward to it eagerly.
This term’s Integrated Studies topic is Natural Disasters. During class discussions boys will be introduced to natural disasters and their characteristics, the effect of disasters on the environment and on people, actions that can be taken in an emergency and precautions that can be taken to minimise the effects of these disasters. During the course of the term, boys will complete a series of assignment tasks designed to enable them to demonstrate their understandings of this topic. In the Science learning area the boys will be continuing the unit in programming. This will again involve the use of Lego RoboLab, where the boys will further develop their programming skills. This unit will be run by Mrs Sue Inness, from Techxellent Training Solutions. The boys will also continue the visits to the Senior School Science laboratories where they will undertake experiments on changing states of matter. The boys not involved in Drama this semester will continue undertaking a Technology unit where they learn how to drill, saw, screw and construct with wood. The Drama Production will also take place later this Term and this will showcase the work undertaken over the first 2 terms by those boys who have been involved in drama with Mrs Pavlovski. Winter sport includes football, volleystars and cross-country running. Each week the boys will participate in interschool sport. Training for Year Six boys is Tuesday after school. The boys will also continue to have the opportunity to hone their leadership skills as a part of their ‘Service Groups’ and to continue to be good role models around the school.
