Mr. Phil Richards - 6R |
| We welcomed 77 eager boys back to school at
the start of the year. We also welcomed Mr Ben Marr into the Year Six
area. Ben is a former Scotch College pupil and most recently has
been teaching at Doncaster Gardens Primary School. Year Six is seen as an exciting and challenging year. Each student is considered a leader and encouraged to take on extra responsibilities as well as set a fine example for the younger students. Specific leadership roles have already been awarded for School Captain, School Vice Captain, House Captains and Vice Captains, Music Captain and Sport Captain. The boys also have the opportunity to be part of a team of captains who work tirelessly around the school and in the Art room and Library. During Year Six, boys work to consolidate and establish their skills of personal organisation, time management, concentration, personal interaction with their peers and common sense. They are expected to meet their study commitments and develop consistent skills in written and spoken communication. Record books are an important part of daily life at Scotch and each boy is encouraged to keep their book up to date. Using the Scotch Intranet on a regular basis is an essential part of life in Year Six. Homework, website links, notices, up coming events, assignment information and published work will be updated regularly. Each student needs to be familiar with using the various folders within the Scotch Intranet environment to keep building on his skills. We have been extremely fortunate to be supplied with a full class set of MacBook computers for the Year Six area. One boy per class has been assigned a computer for the year to care for and use across a range of curriculum areas. Careful timetabling ensures the computers are used to maximum capacity. |

Term Two will be a busy term in the Year Six
area. ANZAC Day and especially the “Spirit of ANZAC” will
be one of the topics for the first part of the term. The boys show a
tremendous interest in this important topic and already some excellent
discussions have taken place. A range of literature activities will be
incorporated into the curriculum based on ANZAC Day.
During class discussions boys will be introduced to natural disasters and their characteristics, the effect of disasters on the environment and on people, actions that can be taken in an emergency and precautions that can be taken to minimise the effects of the disaster. During the course of the term, boys will complete a series of tasks designed to enable them to demonstrate their understandings of this topic. Boys will produce a display of work that will include a news report, a map of worldwide disasters, a time-line, a survival guide and a web page. In the Science learning area the boys will be planning, designing, building and testing ‘renewable energy’ machines. This Technology Unit is a continuation from the science in Term 1 where renewable energy was studied. The culmination of this unit will be a display and demonstration of all the renewable energy machines the boys have produced. Needless to say there is a great deal of excitement surrounding this Technology unit. The Premier’s Reading Challenge is well underway. The boys are encouraged to participate and to read the 12 books from the extensive list necessary to complete the challenge by August. The class novel in all 3 classes this term will be ‘Once’ by Morris Gleitzman and this is in preparation for a visit from him, as part of the Literature Festival in August. Winter sport includes football, volleystars and cross-country running. Each week the boys will participate in interschool sport. Training for Year Six boys is Tuesday after school. Our ‘Social Justice’ program also continues and we encourage the boys to keep bringing in small amounts of money, as our ‘larder’ is growing and we hope to be able to donate it to an appropriate charity later this term. |
