Boarders Lines Newsletter - Term 1 2000
Welcome to New Boys
In spite of one of our hottest summers ever, all the new boys have settled in very well to boarding life at Scotch and are to be congratulated on making such an excellent start. A special mention needs to be made of all the 'old hands' who have made the new blokes feel very welcome, especially the Year 11 peer support mentors.

Hill Prefects and Staff
The Hill community depends very much on its staff and leaders to set the appropriate tone and atmosphere. We have been fortunate enough this year in having some excellent new staff who have already made a very good impression with their enthusiasm and commitment.
In McMeckan - Robert Papuga has joined Hunter's team. Robert is a much respected Art teacher, sports coach and cadet officer. He and his wife Caroline live with their three boys in East Malvern but Robert comes in and assists during the week and on weekends.
In School John has a fresh team of Chris Appel and his wife, Jane, David Brown, Bill Tait and Tim Byrnes and his wife Allison. The have all settled in extremely well and made a fine impression. David Brown was away recently in Singapore spending a two week exchange at the famous Raffles School.
In Arthur Robinson Steve Holding and his wife Sally and their two boys, Tom and William are enjoying their new abode in Morrison Street and their involvement in Arthur Rob and Jen Rowland has adapted very easily and happily to life on the Hill.
Hill Leaders
Nick Owen (ARH) is Captain of the Hill and he is assisted by:

These young men are all very involved in life on the Hill and at school and set a fine example to all the boys in the Hill community.
Hill Sportsmen
Once again the boarders were very well represented in the summer sports this term. In fact considering our Year 12's represent less than 20% of the year level their achievements have been outstanding.

Staff Sportsmen
We have 3 exceptional current staff sportsmen at present on the Hill:
Bill Tait - rowed in the winning Victorian Kings Cup Crew at Penrith and is vying for Olympic selection.
Hilton Munro - toured India with the Australian Universities Hockey Team and then came back for a brief spell before heading off to South Africa to captain the NZ Indoor Hockey Team (Yes Hilton has a foot in both camps as he was born in Kalgoorlie and is studying for a M.Ed at Monash).
Jonathon Stone - reached the final of the single sculls in the recent Australian Rowing Championship in Penrith.
Valete
We will be sorry to see Andy and Georgia Muller leaving the Hill at the end of this term. Andy has recently taken on extra responsibilities at school as Year 8 Co-ordinator, which on top of his huge commitment as coach of the 1st VIII has necessitated a move off the Hill. He and Georgia are moving to their own home in West Hawthorn still only a couple of lengths from the river.
We look forward to welcoming Stefan Janse van Vuuren and his wife Alta and little boy Chris to Arthur Rob and lower Siberia. Stefan originally comes from South Africa and naturally enough he knows a bit about rugby. He is in fact coaching the 1st XV. He will be a great acquisition and we are very fortunate in attracting such high calibre staff to the Hill generally.
Closed Weekend
The closed weekend of 4/5 March saw a hectic schedule of activities and sports where the boys and staff got together for a bit of fun and entertainment. Go-karting, The Motor Show, the Aquarium, Bowling and the Cinema were on the agenda for Saturday. While on Sunday sporting competitions were held for the Wedderburn Cup in Volleyball, Cricket, T-Ball and Badminton with some novelty sports organised by Hilton for the Year 7 and 8's. At the end of Round 1, each House is evenly poised with 20 points each.
Red Shield Appeal
All boys are expected to be involved in helping their wider community in at least one worthwhile cause. Over 70 boys participated in a Doorknock for the Red Cross on the 17 March in the Malvern area. The organisers were very pleased with the boys' efforts, having raised over $4500. Early in next term there is a doorknock for the Salvation Army and any older boys in Year 12 are encouraged to make a blood donation.
The Hobbitt
Mrs Evonne Bills, matron of McMeckan very much enjoyed her exchange to Shrewsbury with Mrs Jaqui Gill and she has now settled back to life on the Hill and is soaking up the view from her new flat at the western end of the hospital.
Evonne organised a great night out for 12 boys to see the play "The Hobbitt". She and the boys had a great evening and we are keen to provide more of these theatrical experiences for the boys, hopefully along with some girls from MLC. She is planning a trip to watch "Snow Business" next term.
Geoff Irwin is well into rehearsals for the senior play "A Voyage Around My Father" where he has a leading role. Chris Cory is helping to construct the sets while Tom Cullen and Ross McAtamney are assisting with lighting.
Boarders' Parents Dinner
A great night was had by all in the Cardinal Pavilion for the third annual Boarders' Parents Dinner, held on Saturday, March 18. The setting was superb and much credit must go to Jenny Clark,
Jo Stringer and Barb Jelbart for all their efforts in organising and setting up the night. Colin Marshall and his staff did a great job with the meal. It is a great way of catching up with each other so make sure you are free again for next year's as soon as the date is set.
Father/Son Weekend at Mansfield
Hilton is organising a special father and son Working bee weekend next term.
The date is 17/18 June.
If you are interested please let Hilton know and come up and have a look at the property, enjoy a cosy fire and even warmer hospitality.
Mansfield / Gordon Owen Lodge
There has been a lot happening this term both for the boys and Hilton but he did manage to get the Year 7's up for a weekend before the end of term. They of course loved it and cannot wait for the next trip. The school is now the owner of the freehold land of 300 odd acres on which the Gordon Owen Lodge is situated. It is great news and very exciting, as it will present some interesting challenges in what to do with and how to manage the property.
24 Hour Hike
The 24 hour hike is one of the best events on the calendar. To see the involvement of more than 120 boys hiking through the bush for 24 hours often with barely a break to raise funds for a charity never ceases to impress. The Hill was again very well represented this year. Katrina Stalker was the co-organiser of the event and she was ably assisted on the committee by Sam Stringer and Kenny Cheung(ARH) with Milton Cheng and Tim Mak(MM). A number of other boys also participated as hikers and first aiders.
Dancing Classes
The Dalmaine Dance Studio will again conduct dancing Classes next term. There will be 14 classes commencing on 18 May, each Thursday night for all Year 10 boys, concluding with a formal Dinner Dance on Friday 1 September at Tudor Court, to which all parents are invited. They were most successful last year and very much enjoyed by the boys. Cush Phillips will again be running the sessions however because the Annexe is unavailable we will have to bus the boys to the Dalmaine Dance Studio in Mangarra Road Canterbury. The cost of the course (excluding the Dinner Dance) is $150 per person.
Welding Classes (open to Year 9 - 12)
Last year a number of boys undertook a welding course at Swinburne on a Monday night for 8 weeks in Terms 2 and 3. They enjoyed it very much and learned a great deal. The classes will be offered again next term, so encourage your sons if they are interested in learning a valuable skill with some great teaching. The cost will be about the same as last year - $140.00.
