Year 10 Personal Health and Fitness (Semester Unit)
Rationale
This subject provides the opportunity for students to
develop a better understanding of theoretical aspects of
sport and fitness through a practical application. It also
provides an opportunity for students to have better
self-awareness of their physical fitness and health.
Objectives:
- To develop an interest and enjoyment in sport and
physical activity.
- To understand the benefits of regular exercise with
regard to Health and Fitness.
- To develop an understanding of the human body,
particularly the musculo-skeletal system.
- To give each student the opportunity to analyse
fundamental motor skills.
- To educate students in the prevention of sports
injuries.
- To appreciate how eating and drinking habits can
affect sports performance.
Course Content
The following topics will be covered throughout the
semester:
- Health and fitness
- Body systems
- The skeletal system
- The muscular system
- Sports injuries
- Sports nutrition
IT Skills
Note taking skills and word processing will be
incorporated in classwork. The assignment will also require
a PowerPoint presentation as part of the assessment.
Homework
Approximately one hour per week is expected.
Assessment
A written comment plus a letter grade (A+ to E) for each
of the following:
- Examination
- Assignment
- Practical reports
Uniform The Physical Education department has a strict
uniform policy.
The Year 10 uniform is:
- White shorts, or shorts of one colour, or Scotch
track suit pants
- House polo top, or white tennis shirt, or plain white
t-shirt
- White socks
- Scotch slicker (optional)
Physical Education
Rationale
Physical Education is an essential part of the total
educational process. Through sporting and physical
activities it provides the opportunity for continuous
development of each student's physical, mental, social and
emotional capabilities. It is aimed to stimulate an
awareness of each student's physical fitness and
simultaneously develop an interest and appreciation of sport
and physical activity.
Objectives:
- To teach the basic skills, rules, strategies and
tactics of a wide variety of sports.
- To develop an interest and enjoyment in sport and
physical activity.
- To give each student the opportunity to develop
fundamental motor skills to full potential.
- To develop an attitude of sportsmanship and fair
play.
- To provide opportunities for leadership and to show
the advantages of friendship, co-operation and
communication developed in a sporting situation.
- To have a positive influence on a student's self
image.
- To develop teamwork skills.
- To develop and educate students in the benefits of
physical fitness, strength, muscular power, muscular
endurance, agility, flexibility, co-ordination and
aerobic endurance.
- To provide students with water survival and rescue
techniques.
