Scotch Parents’ Association
Summer Sports
CYCLING: Parents’ Auxiliary for Cycling (PAC)

BACKGROUND

The PAC was formed in 2010 by a group of interested parents keen to support and promote the sport of cycling at Scotch. Cycling only became an official summer sport at Scotch two years ago and is proving a popular alternative to the traditional school sports.

REGULAR ACTIVITIES

In first term the team trains every Saturday morning around Kew Boulevard and keen parents are encouraged to come and join the boys, either to help out or to enjoy a sociable pedal around the undulating, tree-lined course.

MAJOR EVENTS

Welcome Barbecue: Early in first term on a Monday evening after cycling training, the PAC holds a welcome barbecue for the cycling team and their families at Scotch. This is a great way to meet some of the other parents whose sons are involved in cycling across all Year Levels.

Australian Schools Cycling Cup (ASCC): Join the boys at the ASCC in Dookie. Parents can come up for a day, or choose to stay over with the team for one, two or three nights. This is a wonderful way for parents to get to know each other, as well as to offer support and encouragement to the Scotch team. In 2011, the ASCC was held on Tuesday 29th to Thursday 31st March.

End of season celebration: The PAC plans to have an informal end-of-season celebration for the cycling team and their families in the last week of first term. This evening provides an opportunity for the team and their families to relive the events of the previous week and to celebrate the highlights of the season.

Family Day: The PAC runs a stand at Scotch Family Day in September including a ‘1km time trial’ competition to provide information about cycling at Scotch and to generate interest in the sport.

OVERVIEW OF THE SPORT

Cycling is a summer sport in Scotch and is therefore available in first term culminating in the ASCC competition at the end of term. There is another competition, the Victorian Schools Cycling Cup, held during August with finals in October, in which Scotch also fields a team. Training commences again in fourth term but is not compulsory.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Come along on Saturday mornings for a ride with the boys and other parents. Join in and help out with the various activities. This is a new sport at Scotch and a brand new Parents’ Association – everyone is very welcome to join us and share your ideas and enthusiasm.
