The 1st XI played Camberwell grammar school in the annual Geoff Mills match Monday 14 May at 4.15pm. The match was very tightly fought with both sides having very strong defence and less strong attacking capacities. Scotch had more circle penetrations and more opportunities to score. But Camberwell converted from a penalty corner in the first half and we had difficulty making inroads into their defence. Will Hays drew us level in the second half with one of his famous spectacular back stick tomahawk shots and that is how the match ended when the light faded. Paul Hicks headmaster of Camberwell was here to present the trophy to the captain of CGS first XI which they retain as a result of the draw.
The First XI defeated St Kevin’s 4-1 at the SHC in a match where Scotch dominated possession and territory. The score should have been far greater in difference. Converting circle possession into corners or goals is something the team needs to improve upon. Goals scored by W. Crozier, M. Batrouney, Chris Derry and Bill Veitch. Three corners were won one of these was converted.
The 2nd gold team had an early start in Keysborough where they were quickly caught on the back foot, and let in a couple of early goals. The teams defence was relatively solid however the forwards were a bit conservative in attack. At the beginning of the second half, Scotch let in a couple of early goals again and then realised the value of the ball up forward. Scotch started to show some desperation and courage up forward, and to their credit scored a couple of goals. Scotch dominated the last quarter of the game however it was too late to win. Hopefully next week everyone is switched on from the start!
Final score, defeated 4-2
Best on: Phillip Dahm
Year 10s - A resounding 6 nil win against MGS at windy Todd Road. Team played really well and we should have won 15 nil or more if not for some fantastic saves by MGS goalie. 3 games for 31 goals. We need some competition.
10/9B
10/9 Bs won 1-0 against st kevins in a close nail-biter of a game. Sean (3 votes) scored the only goal and dominated at centre-half again, showing good fitness and ball control. Michael (year 9 2 votes) showed good strength and coverage in full back, laying strong tackles and was the platform from whom we launched our counter attacks. Lachlan Coulthard (1 vote) played well as centre forward and inner, showing off his excellent speed and dribbling skills that allowed him to outrun the opposition
The 8A's travelled to Wesley in excitement of trying to replicate last years performance of 18-0. Unfortunately, Wesley played a very defensive game plus a near best-on-ground performance by their goal keeper lead to only a 2-0 lead to Scotch at half time. However, in the second half, Scotch was able to convert all the near-misses in the first half into goals and came away with a fantastic 11-0 win. A selfless performance by all the boys (seven different goal scorers) was exemplified by Tom Sinclair who played a large role in the majority of the goals but always passed to a player that was in a better position in the circle.
We drew 1-1 against St Kevins, after a shaky start we managed to score early. After struggling to work the ball forward through our mid field, skevs capitalized and scored late in the second. Plenty of positives to take out of the game and looking forward to next week.
The 8B’s this week faced a much tougher match against St. Kevin’s on their first game on the Montgomery pitch this year. The boys were playing a very attacking structure that capitalised on fast turnovers that exploited the St. Kevin’s defence. Oscar McGoldrick-Simonsen scored the opening goal and gave the boys the lead. St. Kevin’s replied with another goal due to some poor marking on our behalf. Max Hebel converted our first short corner of the year with a strong hit from the top of the D which regained the lead. Jonno Kelly then scored the final goal to leave the final score at 3-1. Special mention must go to our goalie, James McNab who proved invaluable in front of goals with his countless saves. It was another impressive win and the team has some great momentum moving into the middle of the season.
The 7A team defeated St Kevin's 10-1. The boys have begun to look like a real team using confident passes to positions behind and forward and encouraging one another positively throughout the game. The boys have practiced corner drills and this was evident from the successful scores off two set plays. With three boys on the sideline interchanges are made constantly with coach Al trying to maximize the time every player has on the field with fair interchange. The first question a player asks when he comes off is "When can I go on ?" . The enthusiasm of the boys is contagious and enjoyable. The scoring of the St Kevin's goal raised a few questions but the boys showed their good sportsmanship by conceding that it was well earned and well deserved .
The Scotch First XI team started well against a strong Haileybury outfit. Will Hays managed a quick early shot which was well saved. Scotch were unable to capitalise on their penalty corner attempts early, and Haileybury drew first blood when a penetrating baseline run was tapped in on the far post. Scotch were able to level the score at 1-1 seconds before half time with a well executed corner conversion by co-captains Chris Derry and Will Adams- Derry deflecting an Adams slap-shot into the back of the net. Scotch struggled to possess the ball for long periods in attack and constant turnovers left the defense exposed. Keeper Oscar Launder kept Scotch in the contest, swatting away some threatening corner attempts. The pressure continued to build and Haileybury were able to get the breakthrough with a corner flick. Haileybury assumed a 3-1 lead through pouncing on a defensive error by Scotch. Year 8 striker Lucas Scott was rewarded for effort with his maiden First XI goal which sparked a comeback by Scotch. We were unable to finish multiple opportunities late, and the game finished 2-3 Haileybury.
Best: Launder (gk), Adams, Derry, Scott.
Carey won 1-0
2nds red defeated Melbourne 3-0 in a scrappy game. The first half saw some good passes squandered in front of net, and in the end it was hard work out of defence and through the midfield that saw reward.
The 2nd Gold (Blue) hockey team lost 0 - 1 against St Kevins College today. The 2nd Gold team played significantly better than the previous week. The team structure was effective and the ball movement especially from the backline was a step up. Jamie was still under lots of pressure in goals, however he managed to save everything in the first half. Unfortunately St Kevins socred early in the second half and the score line stayed at 1-0 for the remainder of the match. Best on for Scotch: Sam Harris
10-A We won 15 or 16 nill, lost count towards the end. Xavier only turned up with 7 players. We allowed them to play some first players but no one wanted to play. Bit of a poor show. I thought 10A was a high standard?
9A With a win of 2-1 it was a fairly lucky result. The boys struggled with the game plan against a stronger opposition. However the positives are that the weaker player really stepped up and played well.
10/9 B's beat Haileybury 3 nil.
Goal scorers were Sean (1) and Lachlan Coultard (1 or 2)
The year 9 and 10 boys integrated well as a team with the year 10 boys in particular stepping up this week. Best players were Lachlan Coultard (3 votes) who showed some excellent ball carrying skills and forward pressure at centre forward, Sean (2 votes) who dominated the midfield at centre half and converted a penalty corner. Both Nigel and Joseph had solid games (1 vote each), who kept pressure on the opposition in their second efforts.
The first team was defeated by Haileybury 3-2. The team was depleted by the absence of two players (one key) at the Mt Gambier Jazz festival. But it does not excuse the inability of the team to read play and take scoring opportunities when they arise. It was a close match and the boys could have drawn the match as they came at the opposition hard in the dying minutes. Schoolboy sport it is and we live to fight another week.
The 8B hockey team won 14-1 against Haileybury College today 5th May. It was a much improved performance and the team now plays as a unit making lots of well crafted attacking moves. The 8B’s played their second match against Wesley at the Junior School pitch on Saturday morning. The Wesley team unfortunately only had 8 players however Scotch pounced on the opportunity to exploit their lack of numbers. At half time Scotch was winning 3-0 but after half time the boys began to use some width and piled on 11 goals in the second half to win 14-1. The list of best players this week is really quite large but special mention to Bailey, Oscar, Oliver, Andrew and Shaunak. The boys will draw plenty of confidence from this week’s game and should be congratulated for their impressive win.
The 7As played Carey on the JS oval. It rained constantly throughout the game. The teams played very even, exciting and dynamic game. In the last 15 seconds the Carey forward line broke away and scored a winning goal. It was a great game played in very difficult conditions.
The team defeated Carey 3-2 and showed depth of character by coming back from 0-2 down at half time. Not taking opportunities to score but dominating the first half was discouraging and it is hoped they learn from this. Schoolboy sport for sure. Will Hays scored two spectacular tomahawk goals in succession to bring us drawn and a converted penalty corner took us to the front. Our three year 8’s assisted the team well and they were impressive.
Scotch was set for a big game opener with a must win situation. Carey brought it right from the start and took an early lead of 2-0, scotch then took control of the game, however struggled to find the back of the net. After many circle penetrations for not results, will hayes took it upon himself and put one on the board for scotch. Five minutes passed and scotch still controlling the play haysey came up with another amazing tommahawk putting it in the top corner levelling the scores. 10 minutes to go scotch manage to rally up a corner, Mark Batrouney manages to score a hit off a bunt giving scotch the lead and the team manages to hold off careys attack for the last few minutes coming away with a victory. It was a great start to the season for the boys with many young players having their first game and being given the opportunity to show themselves and not letting down.
The 2nd Gold hockey team unfortunately lost 1 - 7 to Melbourne Grammar today. Saturdays match was challenging from the beginning with only 6 players present with 5 minutes to go. The umpires let us start the match with our defense ready for some hard work to come. As the half went on Jamie was killing it in goals only having conceded one goals and saved about 20. By half time a couple more boys had arrived in taxis who struggled to find the Todd Road playing grounds. The second half was slightly more unorganised and unfortunately MGS fired in a few more goals. However to Scotches credit, Housten along with the team work of his team mates scored a cracking goal which put us on the board. It was always going to be a difficult match with a number of boys short but the 2nd Golds really stood up to the challenge. Final score 1:6.
I hope that you are having a relaxing weekend.
Def StK 8 – 0; after a slow start as unfamiliar combinations settled in, Scotch returned to basic plays and rapidly asserted their dominance over St Kevins. 2nd Blue Scotch 2nd Gold(Blue) lost 1 – 7 against Melbourne Grammar on Saturday.
Sam score 10 nil, we had to give them a goal keeper say no more. Should have been 20 nil, some good goals were scored we have the makings of a good team. Looking forward to some stiffer competition old chap!
After a some what shaky start with the boys trying to understand our game plan and structures, they stepped up their game to lead at the half 4-0. The second half was a whole lot better with the boys starting to play with the style and structure that was spoken about. When I asked them what they felt they needed to improve on at half-time they all recognized what was required of them. They stepped up and slotted in 6 in the first 15mins. Very promising signs!
A great start to the season. The 8B's had their first match of the season at Brighton. After getting accustomed to their positions the boys began to thread several passes together which provided several promising opportunities. Oscar scored the first goal of the season after finding open space at the top of the circle and giving scotch a one-nil lead. Unfortunately, Brighton fought back and scored one goal against us. Although it was a 1-1 draw, the scoreline does not represent that commitment and hard work that the 8B's put in. It was a very promising start to the season and the boys should be proud of their efforts.
The 8A's played against a very talented Melbourne Grammar team on the weekend where Melbourne Grammar came to play and after the first ten minutes, the 8A's were 0-3. However, after the first ten minutes, the Scotch College team were dominating game play and were playing a very nice passing game of hockey, which was very pleasing to watch. Sadly, we could not convert all our chances and were hurt on turnovers. The final score was 2-5 to a strong Melbourne Grammar team that will surely do well this year. Despite this loss, the depth of the Scotch College hockey at year 8 level was emphasised when three of the boys were selected to play with the First XI on the weekend. 7A won 2-0 against Xavier Burke Hall .
The boys played well as they learnt to play in a new team and developed some set plays .
Special congratulations to Duncan Robertson who played his first ever game of hockey as a full back .
