Scotch’s under 14 team won its division and the under 16 team was runner-up in the Quikstix Schools’ Hockey Tournament, held in Canberra last December.
Twenty-two Scotch boys from Years 7 to 10 travelled to Canberra, accompanied by Julian Collins and me. The teams participated in eight days of intense competition, with Scotch entering teams in the under 18, under 16 and under 14 divisions. Most boys played two to three games a day. It was an opportunity to compete against some highly skilful teams such as the Japanese national side.
A highlight was the game against Japan, which commenced with Scotch running onto the ground to the sound of the College song, played on the bagpipes. The Japanese team enjoyed this immensely once they had worked out where the noise came from.
The Scotch teams benefited from the experience of competing against interstate and international teams. Players found the high standard of the tournament challenging, and played to that level. Their success was well deserved.
