The Junior School’s drama production of Robin Hood inspired keen interest in knights in shining armour, castles, tall and true tales, lavish banquets, wandering minstrels, kings, queens, bishops, monks, pilgrims, and glorious pageantry.
During Term 2, our follow-up studies of Germany in the Middle Ages revealed lots about all of the above, and more. The boys prepared their own shields for display on German Day, showing not only an excellent knowledge of heraldic symbols and colours, but also a sound understanding of the German language. They could describe and discuss their own personal strengths, skills, family origins and heritage.
German Day itself saw the Junior School hall transformed into a medieval banquet scene, complete with knights, minstrels, jesters and street performers. Our dancers combined with ‘courtiers’ from MLC to give a wonderful display of the traditional maypole dance.
The festivities culminated in our very own jousting tournament, and making and tasting traditional medieval surprises. We were even required to defend our own castle moat – but that’s another story.
