Byron Fiske and I set up Year 12 Leadership Committee in 2006 with the aim of providing an opportunity for Year 12 students who weren’t in the cadet unit to take part in an outdoor camp. The group comprised about 20 boys who had been trained in Mr Prior’s Year 10 Outdoor Leaders’ Program, and had then practised this leadership in various activities as Year 11 students. We wanted to plan a hike as independently as possible; although we appreciated Mr Wheat’s assistance.
We eventually decided to tackle the new Great Ocean Walk. The planning itself was a highly educating experience. In this I especially thank Ms Patterson, who kindly offered to drive us to and from the walk. Finally seven boys committed to the camp. We arrived near the Apollo Bay lighthouse just after midday and began our walk along the brand new track. The campsites were world class, all with a fresh supply of rainwater, partially enclosed huts for cooking, and eight separate designated camping spots. The views, especially past Johanna Beach, were spectacular.
The track wound for kilometres along cliff tops with stunning coastal panoramas, and into dense forest. We all enjoyed the walk, and I recommend it for walkers of any experience. We hope there will be a similar hike for the class of 2007.
Finally, I would like to thank Mr Prior who has always been an inspiration and incredible mentor to me and many others, especially in the area of outdoor leadership. Also thanks to Mr Wheat who always found time to help us.
