Great opportunities for Scotch skiers

A major redevelopment of the Koomerang Ski Club lodge at Mount Hotham – approved by members in July – is the latest upgrade in a series of refurbishments at all four Koomerang lodges.

Koomerang has lodges at four ski resorts: in Victoria at Mount Buller, Falls Creek and Mount Hotham, and in NSW at Thredbo.

The Hotham development – upgrading the small lodge holding just eight people into a 16-bed, four-level building with great views – will provide on-site, undercover car parking with lift access from the basement level to the Koomerang section on the top level.

Subject to approvals by the relevant authorities, this project could be completed for the 2007 ski season, bringing total Koomerang accommodation to 90 beds on the four mountains.

A strong relationship is developing between the ski club and Snow Sports, the group formed at Scotch for the benefit of School skiers. Both Adam Lloyd, teacher in charge of skiing in the Senior School and Tim Johnson, his Junior School counterpart, now regularly attend Koomerang committee meetings.

Junior membership of Koomerang is available to Scotch students, entitling them to certain Koomerang privileges and offering them the opportunity to convert to full membership of Koomerang at a reduced entrance fee when they leave Scotch.

Developments at the other three Koomerang lodges have been as follows:

  • Mount Buller: There has been a recent refit to continue to supply comfortable and affordable skiing accommodation. The lodge is in two sections with a total of 42 beds.
  • Falls Creek: Koomerang flats on the top floor of the Sapporo building have been brought up to date with new kitchens and general improvements to the level of accommodation. Sixteen people can be accommodated.
  • Thredbo: The lodge was completely rebuilt last year and now offers a high standard of accommodation, including twin or double rooms, ample bathrooms and kitchen facilities. Interior furnishings were coordinated by Living Edge Interiors, resulting in a degree of comfort not normally experienced in club lodges. The lodge can accommodate 16 people.
