Prep

While still settling in at Scotch, the Preps have been looking at School as their Integrated Unit of Study. The work they have done includes who is at School, the role of the people at School, where you find things at School and the overall purpose of School in their lives. Early on in their study, boys were asked why they came to School and – paradoxically – what would happen if there was no School to attend.

‘We go to School because I have to learn stuff. If there was no School, then how would I ever learn stuff?’

‘I don’t know why we have to go to School but mums and dads have to send you for a bit. If there was no School – that would be fun!’

‘We go to School because I want to learn. If there were no School all the kids would get sad.’

‘We go to School because I want to learn things like how to be good on the computer. If there was no School I couldn’t learn anything, and I would have to swim all day.’

‘If I knew everything I wouldn’t need to go to School, but since I don’t know everything, I need to go to School. If there were no Schools the teachers would all have to go and get other jobs and the kids wouldn’t know anything. Then the parents would have to teach the kids and then the parents wouldn’t have time to work.’

‘We go to School because it is fun, and so Mum can go and have coffee. If there was no School it wouldn’t be fun. I would have to play at home and I would get bored.’

‘I go to School because I like singing “Ants on the Apple”. If there was no School we would have to stay at home and I would miss building in the sandpit.’

‘We go to School because our parents have to go out and make some money. I don’t know what would happen if there was no School.’

‘We go to School because when I grow up I will need to learn the way to the big School. If there was no School you couldn’t go, and then you wouldn’t know how to do your ABC.’

‘We go to School because it’s fun! If there was no School I would sleep all day.’

‘Mum and Dad send me to School to learn how to read and to do music. If there was no School people would have to figure out what they would do, and it would be like the olden days.’

‘We go to School because we’ve finished kinder, and if you go to School, you turn into a grown-up. If there were no Schools you might have to build a School, because we need them.’

‘We go to School because we need to learn to read and learn to be more grown up. If there was no School you would have to do School things at home. You would have to do homework and not watch TV.’

‘We go to School to learn things. If there was no School the police would have to come to your house to see where you are.’

‘We go to School to learn numbers, maths, the alphabet, to draw and to learn new games and to learn where your classroom is and to make new friends. If there was no School you would have to stay at home and you wouldn’t learn anything.’

‘We go to School to learn things and to be clever. If there was no School nobody would learn things and then teachers would ask mums and dads what one plus one is, and they wouldn’t even know.’

‘I don’t know why I have to go to School, but I think it’s good. If there were no Schools it would not be good because I like coming to School.’
