Academic learning is enhanced when students understand and reflect on their learning process. Having an understanding of what it means to learn and how their attitudes and emotions play a pivotal role in this process is an important component of the Year 4 program. Boys are often asked to reflect on their learning journey – their progress, achievements and goals. Some responses have included:
‘The most important thing I have learned is that I should be enthusiastic about every lesson I attend.’
‘I will always remember to try my best.’
‘I can now stop talking and focus on my work.’
‘The most important thing I have learned is to have a go, and that you can learn from your mistakes.’
‘The most important thing that I have learned is to do things myself, and not rely on others to do it.’
‘I am proud of my attitude towards schoolwork.’
‘I can now write in joined-up writing because I practised every day.’
‘The most important thing that I have learned is to do your best and not to give up.’
‘I am proud of the improvement in my reading and writing.’
‘I will always remember to be happy when learning, because if I am happy, I can concentrate better and learn more.’
‘I need to improve on my listening skills by being more attentive in class.’
‘I want to get better at sitting still so I can learn better.’
‘I will always remember to be confident in my working.’
‘I am now a lot better at maths because of the extra work I have been doing at school and at home.’
‘I am a lot better at working with other people in small groups because we do lots of group work at school.’
‘I can now finish off my work.’
All boys are given opportunities in the classroom to develop specific knowledge, skills and interest in a wide range of academic areas. The continued development of literacy and numeracy skills, and the ability to apply thinking and communication skills across the curriculum, will allow all students to explore concepts in greater depth.
