Navin Ranasinghe

William Simpson

The last edition of Great Scot included the excellent VCE results of the Class of 2006. Since then, Scotch has been delighted to hear of further individual achievements.

Navin Ranasinghe not only received a National Scholarship from the University of Melbourne, but has also been awarded one of the inaugural Lord Florey Prizes (replacing the Australian Students’ Prize). The Australian Government acknowledges the most outstanding students in each state, presenting each recipient with a handsome certificate and a prize of $2,000.

Navin also received a Premier’s Award for Mathematics. A Premier’s Award is given to a very small number of students in Victoria who have achieved outstanding results. Navin also received a place on the Dean’s Honour List (Commencing) in the Faculty of Science at the University of Melbourne. A place is given to the highest achieving students entering the Faculty of Science.

Matthew Ng received a Lord Florey Prize and a Premier’s Award for Physics.

Other students to receive a Lord Florey Prize were Ashish Sharma, William Simpson, Tian Tu and David Yang (who also won a National Scholarship from the University of Melbourne).

Along with Navin and Matthew, Benjamin Wong (English) and Ray Wang in Year 11 (Chinese Second Language) were worthy recipients of a Premier’s Award.

Joining Navin in receiving a Dean’s Honour (Commencing) in the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Science were Duncan Lee and Andrew Caldwell.

In 2005, Luke Woodard’s Design and Technology folio was selected for Top Designs, a most commendable achievement by a boy still in Year 11. This was followed by a Premier’s Award and, a year later, a scholarship from Monash University to study Industrial Design (which, coincidentally, was won by Jake Eadie the previous year).

Mond Qu won the People’s Choice Award for Top Designs for his Unit 4 folio and design in Visual Communication and Design. This is a superb achievement: as part of the Victorian Curriculum Assessment Authority’s Season of Excellence, the award is given to the VCE student whose work the general public deems to be the finest folio on display.

Angus Wong has recently been awarded a Monash University Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Scholarship.

Edward Whitelaw (Captain of the School 2007) was selected for Top Acts for his Drama solo performance as part of the VCAA’s Season of Excellence. GS
