‘A short story with spirit and imagination. A book with an extraordinary graphic style. But beware: it could literally leave you a little breathless.’
Words: David Ashton
That was how one critic assessed a new book by multi-talented illustrator, author, mural artist and graphic designer Myke Mollard (’85).
On a Monster’s Doorstep, which Myke has written and illustrated, tells the story of a family on a yachting holiday who take refuge near a coastal rainforest during a storm. When two boys go exploring, one encounters a bunyip in a billabong. He escapes, but his family finds his bunyip tale a little far-fetched. The book focuses on the mystery and magic of the ancient Australian landscape and its creatures.
Having established a successful career in design, advertising and marketing, Myke Mollard is now pursuing his passion for storytelling. He has also fully developed his computer-generated graphic skills, and takes his inspiration from these skills and his love of the Australian bush and its creatures. On a Monster’s Doorstep is Myke’s first illustrated book. He lives in Melbourne with his wife, Jodi, and their four children. GS
Correction
‘What they’re doing now’ in the May issue of Great Scot included an item about the wedding of Jon McGregor (’92) and Kristina Wilson, in which there was a reference to Abigail McGregor as Nick Hirons’ sister. This was incorrect. Abigail is actually the sister of Simon, Matt and Jon McGregor.
