Old Scotch Tennis Club members’ disappointment at the suspension of the Past Students’ Tennis Association competition has been tempered by the great interest shown in Saturday afternoon social tennis at the Scotch courts.
On autumn and winter Saturdays, up to 20 players have participated in very competitive doubles matches. This is very encouraging, and is indicative of the health of the club and the interest of members.
A court captain ensures that playing time is available for everyone and partners are varied. Afternoon tea is provided.
If you’re interested in joining these keen players, please phone the club President, Colin Simpson on 9890 8257 or the Captain, Bill Duncan on 9533 1881.
In the club’s annual championships, Tony Noble won the B grade singles, Ian Marchment and Peter Baines took out the B grade doubles and Douglas McKinnon and Geoff Hindle were successful in the C grade doubles.
Every second year, the club – supported by Scotch and the Past Students’ Tennis Association – runs the John Hill Memorial Tournament, in memory of former tennis player and administrator John Hill MBE, a great contributor to the conduct, growth and success of the Past Students’ Tennis Association. Players from any club in the PSTA are eligible to participate, and approximately 50 players took part this year.
The Old Scotch Tennis Club was well represented, and two of the club’s doubles pairs were successful. Ian Marchment and Ian Richardson won division three and Malcolm McCandlish and Alan Lewis took out division four.
