Year 7 boys get right into tree planting

WORDS: Ms LIBBY MOORE AND Mr JULIAN COLLINS

Scotch Year 7 boys are among students from 500 schools in 104 countries participating in Global Environment Online (ENO), a global virtual school and network for sustainable development and environmental awareness.

Run by Mrs Libby Moore from the Scotch IT Department for the past six years, this program involves studying four environmental themes within a school year.

This year 210 schools from around the world participated in a tree planting day on Sunday 21 September, the day of the equinox when the sun shines for exactly 12 hours. Because of school holidays, the Year 7 D students held their tree planting a little earlier, on Wednesday 10 September.

Fifty native riparian shrubs and endemic grasses were planted on the banks of the Yarra under the supervision of Mr Julian Collins and Mrs Libby Moore. This will continue to contribute to the revegetation program of restoring native habitat to the banks of the Yarra, conducted by Mr Matt Manning and a group of environmentally proactive students.

Details of the ENO program can be seen at http://www.joensuu.fi/eno/basics/briefly.htm.
