OSCA President’s Dinner and AGM

WORDS: Mr TIM SHEARER

Max Foster (Yr 11) with Mark Mitchell

The fifth annual OSCA President’s Dinner was held in the David Yu family foyer of the James Forbes Academy on Thursday 13 November. The night celebrates the previous year and recognises those who have contributed to it.

Comedian Mark Mitchell spoke on ‘The principals of education’, an address which included a wonderfully witty comparison of the principal of 1970 with the principal of 2008. The stereotypical principal of 1970 ruling with an iron rod, striking fear into his students and staff was satirically contrasted with the stereotypical new age principal – a softer, (overly) consultative leader who has to deal with very different issues.

Former OSCA President Geoff Tolson paid tribute to his great friend Garth Tapp who died on 25 October, and OSCA Merit Awards were presented to John Bell (’60), Graham Stanley (’60), Keith Weymouth (’44) and Bob Welch (’66).

Jeremy Chen, Peter Findlay, Bob Welch,
David Tyrrell and Cameron Malingbrough

OSCA Councillors Dugald McWilliams (’90), Andrew Wallace-Smith (’72) and Bob Welch (’66) were fondly farewelled after announcing their resignations from Council. Each has made an outstanding contribution to the well-being of the Association and the School. GS
