WORDS: TIM SHEARER
It would be easy to allow what happened in the last 20 minutes of the Old Scotch Football Club’s Senior team’s season to cloud what was a most successful season for the club.
In that period – during the last quarter of the first semi-final – Old Xaverians turned a 32-point deficit into a six-point victory over our 1st XVIII. We extend congratulations to eventual A section premiers, St Bede’s/Mentone Tigers.
That aside, there was much to applaud about the 2008 season, as the club continued to make considerable progress towards its goal of ‘sustainable TEAM success’.
Written off by many pundits before the season as likely to drop to B section, the Seniors played some very good football during the year, and for two rounds were on top of the A section ladder, before finishing fourth and playing in the first semi-final. The Under 19s also performed strongly, and won their first semi-final before going down gallantly in the preliminary final to the eventual runners-up, De La Salle.
The Reserves had a difficult season, but finished well, winning some games and coming close in others. The Thirds and Cardinals struggled at times, but the spirit and camaraderie remained strong. Our Superules team played with plenty of intensity, and although winning only two games, were within reach for another five of the season’s total of nine games.
The club’s excellent progress is due in no small measure to the fantastic work of the match committee, led by Bruce Armstrong, our dedicated group of coaches, led by Peter Banfield, and our hard-working general committee.
We enjoy outstanding facilities at our home ground, Camberwell Sportsground – arguably the best in the VAFA. This will be further enhanced by the installation of a new electronic scoreboard at the ground before the start of the 2009 season.
We’re looking forward to 2009 with great anticipation. The club has built an outstanding resource for the development of our team, and we look forward keenly to taking the next step.
We welcome new players, and encourage Old Scotch footballers to get on board. For more information about the club, visit http://www.e-brochures.com.au/osfc/.
