Words: PETER RILEY – TEACHER IN CHARGE, BADMINTON
Scotch’s 1st badminton team triumphed by seven sets to five over the previously undefeated Haileybury team, winning the APS badminton premiership for a record fifth successive time, and stretching its unbeaten record to a stunning 43 matches.
Geelong Grammar School held the previous record for consecutive wins – 28. Scotch’s unbeaten record of 43 wins stretches from 14 February 2004.
The Haileybury match was a real challenge, as Haileybury had some exceptional players, including a national player and the under 17 State champion. Haileybury had defeated every other team leading up to the Scotch match.
After the singles round Scotch was ahead five matches to three, and clinched victory by winning two doubles matches.
Congratulations to the team, the Co-Captains Azrul Azri and Euikuk Park, and the coach Danny Tan (’04). Other team members are Jonathan Chen, Sean Lim, Shaun Lim, Mark Lym, Kevin Shi, Phillip Tan, Ronald Teo, Christopher Tham, Michael Yang, Michael Jones and Joshua Ch’ng.
