What a great start to the 2008 year! Since the installation of Peter Turnley (’57) in November 2007 as Master of the Old Scotch Masonic Lodge, the Lodge has had a very full ceremonial program.
In February Emllyn Green (’03) and Ninan Mathew (’00), were initiated and welcomed into Freemasonry, joining the growing number of young Old Boys in the Lodge. Then in March, John Cooper completed his basic journey, progressing to become a Master Mason. Also in December, Jim Mitchell (’41) was presented with his 60 years’ service jewel by his long-time friend Bob Arnold (’44), in recognition of Jim’s outstanding service to Freemasonry. In April we started a new series of Masonic education, with a ‘walk through’ explanation of the first degree ceremony.
The May meeting is our annual Old Boys’ night, when Old Boys from other Lodges are especially welcome to visit no. 396. It was a night of special interest, with presentations on the Scotch Archives and Heritage Club by special guests, as well as the usual enthusiastic singing of the School songs, and catching up with old friends.
We have also had an enjoyable social program, with a family barbecue in March at Pete and Ros Turnley’s home, and a golf and bowls day in April at Riversdale Golf Club. Charitable activities have included Christmas toys for the Salvos and a district charity challenge presentation in February on behalf of the Salvos.
The OSC Lodge meets on the first Thursday of each month (except January), at the Camberwell Masonic Centre. All Freemasons are welcome. Interested Old Boys are invited to contact the Secretary, Stuart McArthur, via the OSCA office on 9810 4302. The core values of Freemasonry are: practise universal charity, provide opportunities for self-development, build friendships, foster moral standards and seek excellence in all pursuits. GS
