Words: Mr Tim Shearer
The Old Scotch Football Club has kicked off the 2009 season by fielding five teams in the Victorian Amateur Football Association competition and one team in the Superules competition. Peter Banfield continues as senior coach, assisted by Brian Winton, Chris Cogan and Simon Moule. Paul Dodd is coaching the 3rd XVIII (under 19s) and Tim Pritchard is coaching the Cardinals XVIII.
Many new faces from the Class of 2008 joined pre-season training sessions at Scotch, along with a number of former AFL, VFL and country players. Will Lewis (’00) is once again club captain and Pat Butler and James Byrne are vice-captains. New players are still most welcome, as are volunteers for off-field roles.
The surface at the Camberwell Sportsground has improved significantly, having been sown with drought-tolerant grasses, and the new electronic scoreboard will be fully operational later in the year. We are indebted to K2 Asset Management and Pulse Pharmacy, our major sponsors.
The club raised $7,000 to help player Ashley Walsh and his family, who lost everything in the Black Saturday bushfires. The Cardinals raised $15,000 to help the Kinglake Football Club, which was severely affected by the bushfires. The team’s match played at Kinglake Football Club on Sunday 22 March was a very special day.
