Koomerang’s ready for the ’09 ski season

Words: Mr Doug Draffin – Honorary Secretary, Koomerang Ski Club

Koomerang’s lodge at Mt Hotham

Fifty-two years on, Koomerang Ski Club maintains its very strong links with the Scotch Family, offering excellent accommodation at four of Australia’s premier ski resorts.

Our flagship lodge is at Mount Buller, which holds 42 people; 34 in the main section of the building and a further eight in the upstairs apartment.

At Falls Creek, the long-established Koomerang Flats continue to be popular with club members. There are two adjoining flats which can be booked together to hold 16 people, or individually for eight people. Located in a most accessible site on the mountain, this property is in excellent condition. Under the direction of Chris Hoelter, work during the summer has ensured they are in tip-top order for the next ski season.

Our third lodge is at Thredbo, NSW, one of the few Victorian lodges at this top-notch ski resort. Open 365 days a year, Thredbo offers a variety of ski runs during the winter, and summer activities as well. There are tennis courts and a golf course, and an annual jazz festival.

Our fourth lodge is at Hotham, the king of Victorian ski resorts, with many different ski areas served by a number of lifts. Some say Hotham, higher in altitude than any other Victorian resort, offers the best skiing in Victoria.

We had hoped that a joint development for our site would have started in 2008, but unfortunately this has not yet eventuated.

The present committee has decided that Koomerang needs a stand-alone lodge on the Hotham site to accommodate up to 16 people, similar to our very successful Thredbo Lodge. The architect who designed the Thredbo Lodge has prepared plans for a 16-bed Hotham lodge, but the plans are currently on hold.

This will be an expensive project to complete and furnish, and the committee has decided that the time is not right. Instead, the lodge has now been completely refurnished and exterior work is progressing. By the start of the 2009 ski season, it will be a most comfortable lodge for eight people.
