Words: Mr Tim Shearer • Editor, Great Scot
Speaking at the opening of stage two of the James Forbes Academy in February 2005, the former Chairman of the School Council, Mr Michael Robinson said the construction of the academy was ‘a statement, in the strongest possible terms, of the importance of the performing arts, both as ends in themselves and as part of the total education of our students.’
As Scotch hoped and expected, the ‘JFA’ as we affectionately know it, has certainly helped to intensify what was already a strong focus on the performing arts at Scotch. We are truly blessed to have such a world-class facility in which our students can learn and perform music and drama.
This edition of Great Scot celebrates the performing arts at Scotch. Right through the School, from the youngest forms in the Junior School up to Year 12, Scotch boys have unparalleled opportunities to learn musical instruments, to sing in choirs and to perform in plays or musicals.
There are many reasons why boys may wish to learn to play an instrument or learn drama. Perhaps they dream of a career as a professional musician or actor; perhaps they want to boost their confidence or sharpen their presentation skills; perhaps they simply seek a tangible means of self-expression. Whatever the reason, Scotch can provide them with the outlets for their dreams and ambitions.
I hope you enjoy our articles covering just some of the rich tapestry of Scotch’s performing arts, and indeed all the other articles in this edition.
