Scotch College was well represented when the Returned Services League of Australia re-instituted the Ceremonial Commemoration of the Death of Old Boy, Sir John Monash.
The Ceremony held on 8 October 1999, was held at the Brighton Cemetery, his burial place. More than 350 people, including a wide range of Military and Civil dignitaries, the Scotch College Guard, Military Band and Pipers, crowded into the forecourt to commemorate his life.
The Unit was proud to supply ceremonial assistance from Sir John Monash's alma mater. The cadets were commended on their presentation, bearing and drill especially considering the heat, sunshine and extended period of time without movement.
Master of Ceremonies, Mr. Allan Blankfield introduced Mr. Bruce Ruxton, AM, OBE (RSL-Victorian State President), The Hon Bruce Scott, MP (Minister for Veteran's Affairs), The Hon Jeffrey Kennett, MP (Premier of Victoria), The Hon Walter Jona, AM and Mrs. Elizabeth Durre.
Much of the success of the event is attributed to the work of LT Norman Bain, LT Jason Bain and WO2 Barry Davidson. The RSL has gratefully thanked the contributions of Scotch College. The event was publicised through National Network Television News and a variety of newspapers.
It is most fitting that Scotch is involved in a ceremony which honours one of its most famous Old Boys and it is expected that this will become an annual event.
