Some of Scotch's top swimmers certainly didn't stop swimming once the APS and All Schools Championships were over.
Andrew Birch, Jason Bond, Robert Hunwick, Leonard Kong, Jaime Reyne, and Sam Webb travelled to Challenge Stadium in Perth, during the first term holidays, to compete against other Australian swimmers in the country.
All the swimmers train outside Scotch, as an extra curricular activity providing them with the necessary skills and fitness to compete at the national level.
Most events swum ranged from the 100 metre sprints to the middle distance 400 metre Freestyle where Andrew Birch demonstrated why he shines in surf lifesaving competitions. This was fully supported with the 200 Backstroke and Individual Medley.
Sam Webb confirmed his status as one of Victoria's top surf lifesaving and pool competitors, by competing in the 200 and 100 metre Freestyle events, with Jason Bond and Leonard Kong competing in the Breaststroke events.
Both Rob Hunwick and Jaime Reyne managed to compete in the finals. Rob competed in the 100 and 200 metre Backstroke events where he secured a fifth and fourth placings respectively in Australia for his age group.
Rob swam well in both these events at the Olympic Selection Trials in Sydney without progressing into the finals.
The effervescent Jaime Reyne swam in six finals, gaining two Australian gold medals as a member of the 14 and under Medley and Freestyle Relay teams. His other events in the finals included the sprint events of the 100 and 200 metre Freestyle and Butterfly.
The ability to commit to a training regime to secure swimming talent, such as those above, requires at least 6 training sessions of at least two hours each a week, as well as the time management skills required to successfully complete a busy Scotch schedule. Congratulations to all the swimmers on reaching such a high level in their sport.
