Cordner-Eggleston Cup OursTen members of this year's Scotch College team for the Cordner - Eggleston trophy had played in the corresponding match last year, where despite fantastic leadership from 1999 captain Will Elliot, Scotch were defeated, on home territory by Melbourne Grammar.
Led by 2000 captain Will Lewis, the team was very committed and disciplined, and from the first bounce were in total control, leading by nearly 30 points at quarter time, and 45 points at the long break. The win was set up by a dominant ruckman in Dave Jennings, and a very clever and aggressive midfield led by Campbell Brown, Will Lewis and Will Slade. Andrew Quail, Gavin Prendergast and Duncan Knight held up the defence, while key forwards Charlie Hunt, Ben Smith and in particular CHF Nick Gill finished off the good work of the others up the ground. Despite the expected fightback from Melbourne Grammar in the second half, Scotch continued to outplay and outscore there opponents, winning every quarter and extending the lead at the final siren to 68 points, the final score Scotch College 18/12/120 to Melbourne Grammar 7/10/52. Four Scotch players, Gill, Hunt, Routledge and Brown all kicked 3 goals and the team recorded a season high tally of 53 tackles and 25 shepherds. The final score was the result of a total team effort.
