Scuptor appointed

Mr Louis Laumen has now been contracted to create and install the sculpture, which will be a joint gift to the people of Victoria from Scotch and Melbourne Grammar.

1858 Sculpture Mr Laumen is acknowledged as one of Australia's top sculptors. His work, based on the first recorded Australian Rules Football match between the schools, played in August 1858, depicts a Scotch and a Grammar school boy striving to gain possession of the ball. A third, more adult figure, is Tom Wills, who wrote the rules and umpired the match.

Tom is recognised as 'the father of Australian Rules Football'.

The sculpture will be sited at the MCG, in the centre of the forecourt, between the Gallery of Sport and the MCC bronze entrance gates.

With an overall height of 3.5 metres, on a granite base of one metre, and weighing four tonnes, the sculpture will be sensational, particularly when floodlit at night. It is anticipated a million visitors from overseas, interstate and local will view it each year.

Fund raising has been very successful and sincere thanks are due to our patrons Doug Heywood and Don Cordner, the team captains and alternates who signed letters and followed up; and of course the donors.

Only $2,900 out of $165,000 remains to be raised and this will be achieved when the outstanding promises are received.
