The 1999 Tunbridge-Cowper Cup was rescheduled into 2000 to accommodate some unavailabilities but it didn't spare us from another disappointing result.
The Scotch team went down to the Geelong Grammar team for the third successive match and are now down 2-4 on the ledger, since the game was inaugurated in 1994.
The game was played at Watson Park in Ashburton and the day started well when we won the toss and sent them in on a wicket that appeared to favour the bowlers (well it was wet at one end anyway!!). Geelong started well and were 2 for 99 before we collected the next 6 wickets for 50 runs.
Some mercurial fielding from Ben Milliken, who ran out the Geelong Captain with a direct hit, whilst lying prostrate on the ground, started this mini collapse. However, the tail wagged and they made a respectable, but very gettable, 175 run total. Stuart Milliken (3/11) and James Ross (2/14) were the best of the bowlers.
Some tight Geelong Grammar bowling saw us get off to a very slow start and after 17 overs we were 1/26. With only 40 overs to chase the total, it required some strong batting and Stuart Milliken (41) and Tim Downing (22) got us back in the picture, but a steady flow of wickets (Maplestone 0, Spiden 19, Shearer 11, Ben Milliken 17, James Ross 8, John Ross 2 and Thomas run out for a duck without facing a ball!) saw us dismissed for 135.
It's back to the drawing board for the 2000 clash which will be played in November and is now a MUST WIN affair!
