On the evening of Tuesday 2 May, Kenneth Harril Gifford Q.C., Kings Scout, Freeman of the City of London, author, Old Boy (Class of '39) and philanthropist was honoured by his old school.
The clock tower, part of the campus developments associated with the construction of the Language and Culture Centre was named 'The Gifford Tower'.
In his comments at the naming ceremony, the Chairman of the School Council, Michael Robinson, noted that in 1965 the news of the freeway plans was not good and would seem to have a great impact on the school - almost skirting the main oval.
Ken Gifford - a volunteer - assisted by John Winneke and the late Alan Lobban, and with the help of consulting engineers Milton Johnson and Associates, persuaded government to adopt the more expensive plan to construct the freeway above Gardiner's Creek.
Ken's great love for the school and his determination to help ensure that it remain one of Australia's great educational institutions has been a passion and his involvement with the freeway development and other important matters will always be remembered with gratitude.
The Gifford Tower is now a major gathering point for the boys of Scotch College and it is appropriate that a great Scotch Collegian, Ken Gifford be honoured in such a way.
