At a special Assembly on Monday 24 March 2000, the Junior School was pleased to welcome Dr Donaldson and the School Captain, Tom Cade, who both joined us to present badges of office to our school leaders.
Tom spoke to the Assembly about leadership and stressed the importance of every boy taking responsibility for leadership, regardless of whether they had been presented a badge or not.
To quote Tom, 'Wearing a badge of office makes you no more important than anyone else, as we all have responsibilities to each other.'
School Leaders for 2000 are: School Captain: Christopher Robson, School Vice Captains: Andrew Prowse, Oliver Baxter, Andrew Hardeman, Music Captain: Thomas Naughton, Bradshaw House Captain: Andrew Fairservice, Bradshaw House Vice Captains: Angus Brougham and Alastair Gurney, Campbell House Captain: Benjamin Wong, Campbell House Vice Captains: Nicholas Cathie and John Kafkas, Healey House Captain: Alexander Booth, Healey House Vice Captains: Thomas Rees and Alastair England, Waller House Captain: David Taylor, Waller Vice Captains: William Marshall and Thomas Sutton
This year the Junior School is once again fortunate to have such enormous parent support and involvement across a host of activities.
Throughout first term, a series of Year level Morning Teas and Cocktail parties occurred, with good numbers attending each function.
The JSPA, under the leadership of Mrs Susan Hughes are coordinating a number of events for the remainder of the year and her committee are ably assisted by a large band of Year Level and Class Convenors.
The purpose of our JSPA is to support various 'boy focussed' activities, and provide opportunities for parents to come together as a part of the Scotch Family.
The Junior School staff and boys greatly appreciate the time and effort dedicated by this committee and extends thanks for the recent financial support given towards the new Junior Primary Playground, located behind Arthur Robinson House.
The boys have reached the final stages of the Global Project and were highly motivated to be at school on Friday morning at 7:30 am for the second of their Video Conferences with River Oaks Public School, Canada. This link-up enabled the boys to once again chat 'face to face' with their international friends, as they discussed the research from the final "Global Cybersphere Mission".
Each of the fifteen teams had selected a major global issue such as 'Ozone Depletion', 'Nuclear Testing' or 'Pollution'. They researched, identified problems and causes, and developed creative solutions to these problems.
Over the past year, the boys have completed several 'Missions' as part of this project, and gained a greater appreciation of the cultural diversity of the participating countries, Australia, Singapore, Germany and Canada. They have regularly used email to communicate, coped with the 'traditional' technology frustrations, and forged some lasting friendships. Benjamin Wong had the opportunity to visit with his team member from Methodist Girls' School, Singapore during the Christmas holidays.
This project has proved challenging and the students have produced many exciting projects. It has been satisfying to witness the growth in both computer skills and confidence in the students.
In Term 4 each year the Year 4 classes participate in a Bike Education programme. For the programme to run successfully we rely on many parents to assist. Thus there is a need for parents to be trained each year as Bicycle Education Instructors.
On May 18th and 19th the Bike Education Training Course was held at Scotch College Junior School. We are lucky to have three parents from the Junior school training this year who will then assist us in Term 4. Wendy Dawson (Luke 4L), Stephen Grover (Hugh 4W), Bronwyn Peters (James 3N) participated in the course.
