The Year 11 Studio Arts students are involved in creating a short animation using plasticine figures; this is often referred to as claymation and it is a very popular style of presentation.
Most of the community have seen a Wallis and Grommit cartoon on television and appreciate the tremendous sense of fun they create.
Small teams of three or four students have each drawn up a storyboard and are shooting a tape, following the script, and moving the characters around. The sequence shown here is based on surfing. The surfers on their boards are all characters that those who ride the waves will identify with. Sam Moore, Alex McPhie and Richard Paton who developed this piece, are shown (top right) filming with the digital video camera. They set the camera to take five frames at a time, and then edit this tape directly through a computer using Premier software producing a video tape which has dialogue, background sounds, special effects and titles. To capture a minute of raw footage takes approximately two and a half hours of concentrated and detailed work. The final product is anticipated to run for about two minutes and will be available for viewing at the annual art show on Family Day which will be held this year on Saturday, 10 October.
