On Thursday 9 April, at Government House, a very large gathering of invited guests witnessed a wonderful presentation ceremony to recognise the outstanding VCE students of 1997.
In the gathering were those students who had not only achieved a maximum 99.95 TER, but who were able also to be ranked as the top ten students in the State.
Awards were also presented to those students who were in the top five for each VCE subject (ten in English and Mathematics).
Clearly these were outstanding achievements in a competition of 45,000 students.
Scotch was very proud to have three students in the top ten in 1997: Daniel Mathews - first in Victoria, Mayur Krishnaswamy - fourth student, and Jai Darvall - seventh student.
Daniel was also awarded Mathematics and Physics prizes and Mayur, a German Prize.
In addition to these awards, Geoffrey Kong was awarded a Mathematics prize and James Luke (Year 11, 1997) was awarded an Environmental Studies Prize.
To complete the wonderful day for Scotch, Daniel Mathews spoke to the large gathering as the representative of the Award winners. He did us all proud with his modesty, well presented thoughts and his obvious love for his school.
Daniel's main theme was one of encouragement to all VCE students to work hard, enjoy the academic challenge and also to keep up with sport, music and other important educational activities outside the classroom. In his speech, Daniel stated 'that a broad education is far more rewarding than a completely academic one, and with the occasional detachment from studies, one can stand back and put things in perspective.'
The Scotch Family congratulates these students for their outstanding achievements and for the wonderful role models they have been for those who follow.
Apology
Great Scot apologises for awarding a Melbourne University Medical Scholarship to Kenneth Nguyen rather than Jai Darvall and for omitting Micheil Paton from the list of students who achieved a perfect score of 50, as published in the March issue.
