Boat ramp declared open

In a moving ceremony, Mrs Barbara Blanch declared open the John Blanch Memorial Boat Ramp in front of an audience of some 500 students, parents and friends of Scotch rowing.

The late John Blanch ('38) rowed in two Head of the River crews - as Captain of Boats in 1937 and again when he was Captain of the School in 1938 when he stroked the crew. He retained a lifelong interest in and love for rowing. His two sons, John ('64) and Graeme ('69) also rowed in Scotch 1st crews, Graeme in the five seat of the winning 1969 crew.

Mrs Blanch spoke of her husband's love of the sport and his continued interest. She commented that the naming of the ramp did her family a great honour. Her children and grandchildren saw her declare open the ramp and unveil a plaque in John's honour.

Captain of Boats for 1998 Cameron McKenzie McHarg thanked the school for the provision of the new facilities and promised that the 1st crew would do the best that it could to win the Head of the River.

The boat ramp is 60 metres in length and is supported by four floating pontoons. It is thus able to provide a consistent platform from which to launch boats in all conditions. Dr Donaldson noted that a member of the 'Oarsome Foursome' had described the facilities as 'Simply world class!'

The boat ramp replaces the old staging, part of which was demolished to make way for the freeway extensions. Compensation for the ramp provided a significant part of the funding for the new facility. Together with a significant amount of landscaping and the magnificent Cardinal Pavilion, Scotch boys are privileged to use outstanding facilities. In fact, Scotch is the only school or club to have a freehold title to both its boatsheds and a landing.

The naming of the ramp was a highlight of the now traditional Cardinal Club Annual Breakfast. Once again, oarsmen, parents, coaches and friends of Scotch rowing enjoyed a wonderful breakfast in the riverside ambience and sunny weather.

A row past by the first nine eights completed a memorable morning.
