Federation Cup

Military Band at Flemington

The Military Band enjoyed a day at Flemington Racecourse, having been invited to take part in a parade marking the Federation of Australia.

In between races that had been specially organised to form a Federation Family Day on 12 May, many multicultural groups, cadets and mounted police marched alongside the race track while our Military Band and the RAAF Band played.

Highlights included the red beret parachutists arriving in clouds of red smoke, a bolt of stockmen on horses, cyclists in period costume riding Penny Farthings and wood chopping.

The band played confidently and looked stunning, formed up beside the track in front of the main stands.

Students enjoy lunch with Treasurer

Simon Mitchell and Andrew Jesse, current Year 12 Economics students, attended a post Budget Lunch with the Treasurer the Hon. Peter Costello MP at the Grand Hyatt Melbourne.

Lunch with Treasurer The luncheon, sponsored by the Higgins 200 Club, had over two hundred guests and involved students from a number of schools and members of the public. They heard the Treasurer give his latest assessment of the Economy and explain the significance of his sixth Budget for families, businesses and the general public. As part of the Year 12 Economics course, students are required to analyse the role of budgetary policy, and the luncheon provided Andrew and Simon the opportunity to ask questions of the Treasurer. They sat with members of the business and commercial sector and discussed a range of topics relevant to the Treasurer's speech and the economy in general. Both students were required to report back to their classes and outline the relevant issues discussed at the luncheon.

David Baillieu's long-awaited books

David Ballieu Many will be aware of David Baillieu's long-running research project relating to the early days of Scotch College.

The resulting volumes cover, amongst other things, not only the life and times of Robert Lawson, but also that of his immediate predecessor, George Knox.

Unfortunately, following an illness earlier this year, both books missed their deadline and will not appear this year as had been intended. Readers are assured however, that the project continues.

The manuscripts should be submitted to the publisher late in 2001 or early in the new year.

It is intended that a pre-publication subscribers' list will be opened. Readers will be informed of progress in the next Great Scot.
