Mosaic Garden for 150th

Mosaic Burning Bush

During this special year for Scotch, all the Junior School boys have been involved in a major artistic project. Ms Michelle Newman, mosaic artist and Mrs Ferres, Art teacher, have been teaching all boys in Years 3-6 to make mosaic creations.

Year 6 boys have built a large Burning Bush with the school colours from small pieces of glass and ceramic tiles. Boys have grouted this major feature of the 150th Mosaic Garden. The Year 5 boys have also produced another major feature of the garden.

They have covered a Bird Bath in mosaic shapes of frogs, birds and lizards. This is a most colourful artistic statement.

Boys in Years 3 and 4 have made mosaic tiles with shapes of other Australian animals.

All boys from Years 3-6 have made a mosaic trivet to take home as a reminder of this special project. Boys have completed all the grouting of the mosaics with help from teachers.

The Junior Primary boys in Prep, Year 1 and 2 have made terracotta clay tiles. These tiles have been based on the topic of the school motto and there are tiles with stars, ships, crowns, torches and the Cross of St Andrew.

Junior School staff members have also made clay tiles to be part of this project. Clay tiles have been fired and glazed.

There will be over four hundred mosaic and clay tiles and these will surround the Burning Bush and the Bird Bath. The whole area will be a permanent colourful reminder of our special 150th year. The garden is to be built near the entrance to the Junior School and there will be an opening in fourth term when everything is completed. A special thank you to the Ken Field Memorial Trust for financing this major Junior School project.

Mr Alistair Webster Mr Webster chosen as Teacher of the Year

Mr Alistair Webster has recently been recognised by the Technology Education Association of Victoria committee as their choice of the Victorian Technology Teacher of the Year. Those of you who know Alistair will already acknowledge his talent in the field of Technology. His students have been enthralled by his passion for the subject over many years.

Alistair has served on the Technology Education Association of Victoria for a number of years and was instrumental in the development of CSF 1 and 2. He has presented papers in the field in Melbourne and Perth and is currently completing a PhD on Technology and Learning Styles. He already has completed a Masters degree in Technology Education and Giftedness. To add to this, he has been an instructor of Technology Education for Primary Teachers at Hawthorn Institute and, over many years, has coordinated Technology Education in the Junior School, which has been of enormous benefit to both the students and staff.

On behalf of everyone in Scotch College we congratulate Alistair on this wonderful achievement.

Centenary of Federation

On Wednesday 16 May, the entire Junior School welcomed Mr Petro Georgio, the Federal Member for Kooyong, and the Principal, Dr Donaldson to a special assembly. Mr Georgio spoke to us about the importance of the Centenary of Federation. He encouraged us to learn about Australia's past, to celebrate our achievements as a nation and to consider what we can offer our country in the future. David Thompson, representing the Junior Primary, was presented with a special medallion, while I was given a certificate acknowledging the importance of Federation in this very special year.

The certificate and the medallion can be viewed in the office foyer. All boys later received 'Centenary of Federation' medallions, which have been issued to all primary school students.

Mr Georgio's visit was significant because it reminded us all of the importance of this event, Federation, which united our country, Australia, one hundred years ago, establishing our unique form of democracy.
