The students of Scotch College and Presbyterian Ladies College have combined together once again to provide yet another theatrical highlight through the musical production of ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. This enduring tale of Tevye, the milkman, and his poverty stricken family in Czarist Russia in 1905 has captured the hearts and minds of theatre goers since its opening in 1965, and the students of both these schools did justice to the wit, humour and pathos of this classic story. It is an engaging tale of struggle, yet through the poignancy of the dialogue and the emotional power of the music, it is one full of hope and spirit, with striking moments of tenderness and joy.

The process began last December when auditions were held, and a cast of 50 came together in late March to begin an extensive rehearsal period. This culminated in four impressive performances in the last week of July to packed houses in Wyselaskie Hall at PLC as the show continued to find its shape and rhythm. It has been a unique production, representing the most collaborative effort ever undertaken by both schools. From stage direction, through to set design and construction, lighting, make up and publicity, ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ involved a diverse range of staff and students alike. The final product was indicative of the level of expertise that such collaboration can bring and the sell out audiences were the beneficiaries of this combined effort.

There were many stellar performances on stage, but none more so than that of Chris Anderson (Captain of Drama) in the lead role of Tevye. He proved himself to be a consummate performer in every sense, producing a most mature and skilful portrayal of this famous stage character. His diversity through acting, singing and dancing was totally engaging and he was wonderfully supported by Matthew Cameron as Motel the Tailor and Rachelle Harvey as Golde. The complete ensemble provided enormous depth as the students acted, danced and sang their way through classic songs such as ‘Tradition’, ‘Anatevka’ and ‘Sunrise, Sunset’.

‘Fiddler on the Roof’ is a show vast in size and magnitude and judging from the audience reaction, the students delivered it with telling success and aplomb. It was indeed a pleasure to be part of such a rewarding experience.
