We are not suggesting that all Old Boys will immediately reach for their cheque books when they read this but we hope that many will.
The major building focus for the 1999 Fund is the James Forbes Academy, if not the most exciting, certainly the most ambitious project the school has undertaken since the Chapel was built.
But there are other important areas of development and upgrade envisaged over the next ten or so years. Past boarders might like to support the upgrade of the Boarding Houses. Changes are already evident on "the Hill" with a new "link" between McMeckan and School Houses. McMeckan will be the first cab-off-the-rank when renovations begin.
Sportsmen might consider supporting the upgrade of the Glenn Centre, the Harvey Nicholson Courts and the Montgomery Sportsfield, and the technocrats might consider the development of a Centre for Design and Technology.
And the fund is not only for buildings! You can help expand the school's scholarship and student financial assistance programme, and what about helping to develop an endowment which will allow the Principal to provide salaries and other incentives to attract the best possible staff. How does this year compare with 1998? Sadly quite a bit less - as at 29 July $121,680 compared with $137,067.
But there have been a few high points. Frank Wood's Class of '46 has once again exceeded expectations. Maybe it is Frank's commitment to contacting everyone by telephone. He and his team really enjoy it. Rohan Sutherland's '85ers have had another successful year and Daryl Peachey's '39 ers, who held their 60 year reunion, have been exceptionally generous.
Rob Olney ('79) is really stirring up his reunion year group and Tom Angliss, who is helping to organise the '89ers first reunion, is hopeful that more than 6 members of his class will contribute to their reunion year gift.
Yes, any gift whatever the size does make a difference. Please help make the efforts of Bob Arnold and Keith Weymouth, who spent days reading Collegians to identify Old Boys involved in Music or Drama whilst at school, Simon Tallent who put together some stories about George Logie-Smith, Alec Lyne, Dick Shirrefs and others, and Basil Corr who must be the world's fastest letter stuffer.
