Professor Dr James Simpson ('71) has been appointed Professor of Medieval and Renaissance English, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom.
James takes up this senior appointment in October this year after more than 10 years as senior University Lecturer in English, Faculty of English, University of Cambridge. He also becomes Professorial Fellow, Girton College, in October having been Official Fellow and College Lecturer, Girton College since 1989.
James' CV covering publications from books, articles and items commissioned for publication runs to several pages and reflects a quite remarkable scholarly contribution since he gained his First Class Honours Degree in English in 1976 at the University of Melbourne.
In 1980 he gained his M.Phil with Distinction, at the University of Oxford, in 1995 his M.Phil (by incorporation) from the University of Cambridge and his Ph.D from Cambridge in 1996.
The Chair in Medieval and Renaissance English was created in 1954 for none other than C.S. Lewis of 'Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe' fame. This was the year of James Simpson's birth and only four people have held the Chair in that time.
Other appointments held by James include - Visiting Professor, Chaucer-Langland National Endowment for the Humanities Institute, Boulder, Colorado, July 1995; Visiting Distinguished Professor, University of Connecticut, September, 1997; Lecturer in English Literature, Westfield College, University of London, 1981-89; Tutor in English Literature and Language, University of Melbourne 1977-78.
James's mother, Meg Simpson, sister Julie and brothers Bruce and John are immensely proud of James's appointment. His late brother Robert ('70) and father Ron would have been equally proud of James' achievement.
We all wish him every success.
