CadetsCongratulations to the following students upon their recent appointment: Marcus Doherty - Regimental Sergeant Major History Department welcomes Monty back!'I really feel that I'm part of the place.' That's how Aboriginal raconteur and performer Boori (Monty) Pryor described his annual visit to Year 9 Australian History students first term. The History Department has always placed great significance on its Year 9 unit Aboriginal Australians and Monty Pryor helps the boys to empathise with aboriginal culture through his lively presentation. Formerly from the Cairns area, Monty Pryor has achieved critical acclaim for his book Maybe Tomorrow. He has a demanding performance schedule but told the boys that he enjoyed visiting Scotch because the enthusiastic response to his stories over five years had given him great confidence to develop his career further. At a time when many schools are being criticised for ignoring Australian history in their curriculum, the Scotch Year 9 course has provided an excellent overview of the main eras which have shaped modern Australia. Another feature of the course is the Annual Year 9 History Excursion in May when classes explore Melbourne visiting places of enduring interest and importance. 'At any one time you could find Scotch boys investigating places from the Melbourne Club to the Old Melbourne Gaol', Mrs Westmore added. Mrs Pauline Westmore, Course Convenor |
