Scotch College

Class of 1999, best ever VCE

The students of the Class of '99 completed their VCE in outstanding fashion, obtaining the best set of results ever seen at Scotch.

Analysis of results reveal that 13% finished in the top 1% with an ENTER of 99.00 and above. 51% achieved an ENTER of 90.00 and above (that is in the top 10%) with a median score of 90.25. There were a total of 25 perfect subject scores (50) gained - again the highest number to date. Seventeen of these were obtained by Year 12 students and the remaining eight by seven Year Eleven students.

Adam Sher (three perfect scores) and John Strainge (two perfect scores), achieved the top ENTER score of 99.95.

Class of '99

The destination of each class varies widely, often without clear trends. The most popular destination for the Class of '99 was the University of Melbourne - 94 acceptances, Monash University -77, Swinburne and Deakin 19 each and LaTrobe - 16. Benn Wheeler was awarded a place at the Australian National University in Canberra to study Commerce/Economics and Adam Sher has been accepted into Oxford to read Law. One emerging trend is the increasing percentage of boys taking on combined degrees - typically linked with Commerce. The most common are Commerce/Law, Commerce/Science, Commerce/Arts, Commerce/Economics, Commerce/Information Systems and even Commerce/Engineering. Nowadays it is virtually impossible to obtain a place at the University of Melbourne without an ENTER score in the 90-plus range. Monash University, Clayton Campus, requires a score in the 85 plus range for most courses. ENTER scores have also increased significantly at Deakin University, Burwood Campus in recent years, with most courses now requiring 85-plus to gain a place.

It is a tribute to the commitment and dedication of the Scotch students, teachers and parents that so many boys have been accepted into tertiary institutions and courses where the demand is high and the competition for places is so fierce.

Mr Neil Cracknell, Head of Year 12, 1999
