Designs on Scotch College
A class from Scotch has produced several highly creative furniture pieces as part of their VCE.
The subject, Technical Design and Development, requires students to work towards completing a significant piece for assessment, from its inception, through the planning stages, to the final piece. The projects undertaken are demanding in terms of creativity, working from complex plans, and developing skills in the use of sophisticated tools and materials.
Scotch has only recently introduced the study, but has enjoyed considerable success: pieces included a Pop-Art leather lounge, a unique banana lounge, called a de Cusi - which has drawn the interest of professional furniture makers, and tables and clocks inspired by a class study of famous Bauhaus designers and their products.
Several boys gained valuable inspiration from MAP's Raoul C. Hogg, in Chapel Street, South Yarra. He was able to encourage them with his own professional work, and make suitable recommendations regarding the purchase of materials from local suppliers. The seeking out of materials - standard, unusual and idiosyncratic - was part of the overall brief for students, and the range of media in which boys worked spoke volumes for their imaginativeness.
As a result of the success of the inaugural Design class of 2000, several students have expressed interest in pursuing a career in either industrial or product design. They have set a benchmark to which future students must aspire - and given the intensity of interest in the subject, one can only predict future success for Scotch boys.
