One aspect of the Extension Studies Program is the involvement in domain specific talent development days. Some of these are Scotch based while others require students to attend other schools or venues. These days either extend on what is happening in the classroom or provide students with an experience that is new but complementary to their area of interest and talent.
Such experiences especially suit students whose talent area is more focussed and asynchronous in one particular domain. Scotch boys have attended a Performance Poetry workshop (years 7 & 8), a French Extension Afternoon at Genazzano (Year 10), the Mathematics of Juggling with MLC
(Year 7), Day of Excellence (Year 9) to name a few during Terms 3 & 4. Not only do boys enjoy the variety of material covered, they benefit from working with students from other schools who share their interest in that area.
At the end of term three, several Year 10 French students attended a French activities day at Genazzano FCJ College, Kew.
This afternoon was attended by students from many schools including St. Kevins, Camberwell Girls and Melbourne Girls Grammar. We began by reading through and translating a short dialogue between a man and an angry woman. We later had to act this out as a role-play. In the succeeding activity we picked three objects from around the room and composed an original role-play dialogue. We enjoyed some light refreshments; cakes from Laurent. Overall it was an interesting and relaxing afternoon in a French-speaking environment.
Although there were varying degrees of linguistic expertise, all involved enjoyed performing the role-plays in French.
This opportunity helped everyone improve their speaking skills and allowed us to discuss the language with other students our age.
