Enthusiastic group enjoys London dinner

Alex Buirski and Teruma Naito

A small but enthusiastic group of twenty-six members of the Scotch Family gathered at the Caledonian Club on October 4th for the 2002 OSCA London branch dinner.

Formalities were kicked off with a traditional college grace recited in Latin by Andrew Holmes ('61) joining us again for the evening from Cambridge. The toast to the school was proposed by Peter Robinson ('72) who in June this year, to the astonishment of colleagues and friends, travelled to Melbourne especially for this year's 30th anniversary leavers' dinner.

Our special guest was visiting Old Boy and current school council member John Simpson ('75) who presented the main address for the evening. John gave us an excellent update on sporting and academic highlights at Scotch, followed by two very interesting themes - the importance of the outstanding ongoing contribution to the School made by the Principal Dr Gordon Donaldson, and the recent challenges faced by the school council over selection of its members.

It was good to see a mixture of old faces returning again to the London dinner plus some new ones joining us for the first time. Peter Robinson and Bill Meyer Making the lengthy journey from Wales was Craig Bligh ('76) while from closer by came Bill Meyer ('47), Gordon Goldberg ('55), Chris Legge ('74) and newcomer Tony Bryant ('61).

Earliest class representative was regular attendee Ian Gordon ('38) while most recent school leavers were Alex Buirski ('95), who travelled all the way from Bath, and Teruma Naito ('95). James Gumley ('92) did an excellent job mustering five of the six members present from the class of 1992, the most represented year.

In all it was another great London dinner with the Caledonian Club's superb facilities enjoyed by all. Now that OSCAnet is available it should be much easier for the continually shifting population of Old Boys here in the UK to keep in touch. It gives us terrific prospects for a sizeable group when we reconvene in 2003.
