A masked wine tasting was the second function for 2003 organised by the Wine and Food Club in conjunction with Auscellardoor. Three tables of enthusiastic members gathered in the Boykett Room on 28th August to unravel the mysteries of the eight wines Simon Arms and guest winemaker Michael Warren had selected to test our noses and palates.
Each of the four brackets pitted two wines of the same style from different regions against each other. Vigorous debate followed the presentation of each bracket, guided by Simon and Michael and augmented by plenty of comments from around the room.
The Shaw & Smith 2003 Sauvignon Blanc was generally considered the better of the two whites whilst opinion was sharply divided over the six reds. The two Pinot Noirs and the two Cabernet Sauvignon Merlots all had plenty of support but real disagreement (led by Stan Gyles) arose over the Shiraz offerings, the Red Edge 'Jacksons Vineyard' 2003 from Heathcote and the Tatachilla 2000 from McLaren Vale.
Excellent bread from Phillippa's Bakery and superb Abondance, Le Peilloute and Mimolette Vieille cheeses from Richmond Hill Cafe' & Larder balanced the evening perfectly.
There can be no doubt that the Club's link with Auscellardoor is providing members with access to a splendid range of Australian wines and real expertise in their presentation. New members are always welcome!
