John G. Paton

John Gibson Paton was born in a farm cottage at Braehead, Kirkmahoe, Dumfries, Scotland in 1824 and in 1858 he left for the New Hebrides to become a missionary and, incidentally, raise a large family many of whom were born in the New Hebrides. He had a total 11 children, eight of whom survived infancy, and who, in turn, produced a multitude of offspring. Many members of this extended family have swelled the ranks of Scotch College students. These people are listed at:

So far, I have records of 38 direct descendants who have attended Scotch as students and two as staff. They were at Scotch at various times from 1877 to 1998 during which time there were only 19 years when a descendant was not a student at Scotch. In total, these people add up to 299 years as students and 32 years as staff. There are also five Scotch old boys who married into the Paton family who spent 41 years at Scotch.

There may well be other descendants of John G. Paton who have attended Scotch for whom I have no details. To boost these figures, I would appreciate it if details could be sent to me at:
